The purpose of Brzezinski’s book is questionable. Nor is American policy benign & visionary.
Brzezinsky goes to say, Eurasia has been the center of world power for some five-hundred years, ever since the continents started interacting politically together. The world’s premier powers have always enjoyed the privileges & the special status attained as individual Eurasian states penetrated & dominated other regions of the world, mostly those from its Western European boarders, as well as the people inhabiting Eurasia, at different times & in different ways. The first real global power, the United States, a Western Hemisphere power, emerged after the collapse & defeat of the Soviet Union. Everything! For without a thorough understanding of the past how can one know imortance of the moment? Most of the people I talk to don't know anything about this country's past. Nor do they recognize the significance of its study. For ex: how did we arrive in the moment? What mistakes have our leaders made in the past? It is one thing to dwell in the past but another thing entirely to study the past. It is in the past that one can find the answers to the future. That is, without the past there can be no future. We are all products of our past. It is our unique life expreience which distinguishes us from the masses, just as it our country's past which distinguishes it from other nations.
In the United States Cuban revolutionaries continued to plan & to raise support. Thus the safety of Americans in Cuba was of great concern to Washington. Then, by brutal force in January of 1898 riots were suppressed by Spanish troops in Havana. Afterwards, it was felt in Washington there should be some means of protecting U.S. citizens. Eventually, a reluctant government in Madrid finally cleared the way for a U.S. Naval presence, via Key West to Havana, sent by President McKinley on January the 24th. The situation was calmed by the Navy’s presents, reported both Fitzhugh Lee, the consul at Havana, & Captain Sigsbee, the commander of the USS Maine. When, suddenly the stillness was shattered on board the Maine by a tremendous explosion on February 15th at 9:40 pm. The forward third of the ship was virtually destroyed, ignited by the five tons of charges used for the ship’s six & ten inch guns. When the explosion occurred in the forward part of the ship, the enlisted men’s quarters, most of the crew were asleep. As a result of the explosion two-hundred & sixty-six men died. While those in the aft portion of the ship, most of the officers along with Captain Sigsbee, survived.
Summary Analysis:
Indeed, the Spanish controlled the island of Cuba & attempts by Cubans to liberate them selves is what caused the tension between the United States & Spain in the first place. From 1868 to 1878 an unsuccessful Cuban insurrection had taken place just off the coast of Florida. Many American citizens were executed along with most of the crew of the Virginus when it was captured & war with Spain nearly erupted as a direct result of American sympathizers. The deaths of U.S. sailors did serve as a catalyst but the war with Spain was not caused by the destruction of the Maine.
One might conclude that America’s Armed Intervention or policing around the globe began with the Spanish American War.

Well it looks like i'am getting a little bit ahead of myself here. So i'm gonna have to back up & travel back in time before i can gain a proper perspective on this subject. But tonight i am done in.
