In another life I used to sell insurance and I always suggested to people to collect the junk mail for a few weeks and then do a check around their house and work out what it would cost to cover EVERYTHING in their house from brand new.
People would always want to just pick a random figure of anywhere between 40-70K and I would encourange them to go higher.
If anyone thinks I might be wrong.. look up the term "under-insurance" and "under insurance clauses".
I personally have my contents at $110000 and I add 5% a year for new purchases. I also have to seperately insure my collection of books (1st eds of various authors I like - Incl Biggles! ) as they are worth more than the limits on my everyday insurance.
I pay $102 a month with Vero (Which was formerly Royal and Sun Alliance) and that also covers me for accidental damage and loss/theft outside the home up to $1000 per item.
I recently dropped my $770 camera over the side of the boat into the ocean and that is covered by my home and contents policy!
