I think the keypoint is that the other non-BBC channels do not receive funding from the TV licence. You have to buy the TV licence even if you don't want to watch BBC, and even if you only want to watch DVDs.
In 2009, the politicians discussed giving some portion of the TV licence to ITV and the other channels, but only 3.5% by 2013... who knows what happened to that now!
In any case it is totally unfair that the BBC should be able to apply a fixed yearly tax to a product necessary for viewing other companies productions that may or may not be broadcast.
Although the BBC do deserve credit for some of the early development of TV broadcasting, they did not invent the TV and should not have any exclusivity; certainly not almost 80 years later when TVs are largely made in Asia and have very little to do with BBC original technology.
For TV, I think pay per view or subscription is the best way to go. It also forces the BBC to be more competitive.
Also, the licence fee covers other services including the BBC radio and online services. So UK residents with a TV pay for me to enjoy the BBC news website. That is wrong. Each service should pay for itself whether through advertising and subscriptions.
Having said that I wonder how much the total cost including rental of TV receiver box and subscription compares to other countries. My experience is that all countries are working a scam for everything, and they just package it differently. My biggest pet-hate being the German umweltplakette for the environmental zones.
History shows that people die during war. Unfortunately somehow people seem to believe that modern war can somehow be committed without lies, injury, death and torture.
Are we somehow meant to be shocked by the real death rate? Is there an acceptable death rate? Or is it just the lies that we should be shocked by?
I also do not grasp how it can ever be acceptable/collateral damage to blow up some absolutely innocent children, and yet waterboarding one potential terrorist fruitcake is wrong.
Until Wikileaks starts posting information from the other side of these conflicts, I will continue to regard them as potentially biased, western self-loathing, politically/media fired mental manipulation tool for the masses.
And as for the other nations around the world who point fingers at the US and UK, if they felt so strongly about Iraq they would have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Saddam's boys and physically fought against the invasion.
I feel more revulsion that people are shocked when war turns out to be ugly and full of deceit like all other political affairs. You really expected a war initiated based on lies, to be implemented with truth and political honesty???
In the past, when I was in love I would have donated all my vital organs and thrown myself onto the fire for them. (not the guitar though - don't touch the guitars)
But having gradually discovered that love is often a cruel illusion, I will think twice before leaping in front of any bullets in the future.
"Worse" is a matter of perspective. Without being cruel, from his perspective she must have seemed better, while from your perspective she seems worse. So there must have been some strong mismatch in your relationship, and what you both considered to be ideal/attractive.
Now you can see what he wants, and clearly it is best not wasting any more of your time, life, energy, or worries on him. You don't want to be the replacement for some 20 year old drug user.
Just let him go. Move on and be happy it is over. You can find someone better for you.
I am a little intrigued why a guy needs protecting from bad people!
Contaminate the soil... kill the mushrooms... eliminate eastern medicine... shark eating eastern guys die... especially the ones who believe in shark as medication!
It's a long shot.. but could be more strategic than the direct approach and an infected leg ;)
Short term profit vs. long term sustainability. At the rate they are going with the sharks at least, they could all be out of a job soon anyway and the whole business will collapse.
I think that the documentary shows that the guys actually doing the fishing are really just at the bottom of a larger profit making pyramid. Part of that pyramid will move on to suck the life out of something else.
(Playing devils advocate..) Funghi are important for legitimate pharmaceuticals and eastern folk medicine ;) 'shroom dies, we die, and the sharks live happily ever after.
To select a recent news item, as much as the story moved me, Chilean miners feared cannabilism before the sign that they might be rescued. So we are partially a function of our environment. Although, as the documentary states, our crime is that we are aware of our actions and part of their impact.
The problem being however, and as I have stated, is that as we do not understand or comprehend our ideal state or situation relative to planet earth in 4 dimensional space, so we cannot make a truly informed decision.
Generally speaking, we are no different than animals in that we have the potential to be superceded by a more superior form in the future.
Right...and which socially acceptable animal by western standards are you ignorantly consuming either directly or in some form within a product whether it be gelatin, soap, plastics? Don't tell me your PC is made from hemp?
RE: Would you die for the one you love
Exactly!Actually, give me a few plates in Happy Sushi in Sofia and I could happily feel deluded enough to take a bullet.
