A Story Yet To End

I turn through pages
in my mind,
now cracked by salty tears
from a darker time.
I will never get back
those solemn years,
nor will I fill
the gap they have left.
So why do I try
to revisit these depths,
if all they reveal
is pain?
With what I know now,
I can look back and say,
"From this point and hereafter,
I shall never be the same."
This bright new chapter
that I now write
is untouched by salty tears
from a darker time.

The Witness

My bleeding heart never runs dry,
but the more I try
to patch the wound
the worse it gets,
and the harder it is to forget.
Forget the terror in the eyes
of those whose peers have denied
them justice.
Forget the tremble in the voice
of those who think their only choice
is suicide.
Forget the angst in the heart
of those who seek the part
of themselves that resides within another.
Every suffering soul,
every scarred mind,
every broken heart
adds a tally to the sheet
and the tears I weep
that fall with the rain,
never to be seen again.

Swan Song

The life I'm living
is the greatest gift
that I could be given.
As the future weaves my fate
from the fabric of time and space,
the past continues to fray.
Though I never turn back
as I walk this path each day,
I never forget the lives
I touched along the way.
They will remember me
long after I've gone.
Remember my warm smile,
my open mind,
my kind heart.
This will be my legacy.
This will be my swan song.

Submerged

With her melodic voice and beating heart,
she pulls at my heartstrings
to create a beautiful, sensual symphony--
a song so hypnotic that I let slip
the breath that keeps me afloat,
leaving me free to sink ever further
into the depths of her embrace.

Away From the Ledge

Standing here at the world's crumbling edge,
my memories weight heavy in my heart.
My tears would fall from my eyes like the rain,
had I not shed a thousand thus far.

My family said life is a blessing,
but they never bore my curse.
They smiled to try to bring out my own,
but my lack thereof made me feel worse.

All of my friends have given up
on trying to keep me afloat,
but I cannot blame them when I am the one
who is chained to a concrete boat.

So I'm here at the world's crumbling edge,
ready to start my own end,
when a girl reaches out, grabs hold of my arm,
and tells me that she understands.

I turn to see a pair of blues eyes,
and a smile that's weathered and worn.
She pulls me in close, wraps me up in her arms,
and shows me the light once more.

The Reason

Everything I have
to you I will give.
Everything except
my reason to live.
For this one thing
is you alone--
you are my reason,
you are the one.

Forsaken

I see them walking down the street,
looking for change so they can eat.
I dodge their gaze so I won't see
the pain their eyes convey to me.

Their starving hearts reach out for help,
shunned by those who love only wealth.
Forsaken by all who walk past,
they start to lose their hope so fast.

What happened to the kind and just?
For all I see is greed and lust.
So now I feel that I must change
the world into a better place.

In The Distance

Gazing out over the turbulent waters that surround
me for miles, I see nothing but the blue sky above and
its reflection below. I drift along in heart-wrenching
solitude as the water gently laps at my boat. My only
comfort resides in the memories I hold dear, though
they are fading from my mind.
As I look towards the horizon, the sinking sun sets
fire to the ominous storm clouds that come ever closer.
When night falls, the rain falls with it as the icy gales
quickly launch the sea into a torrential churning of its
darkened waters.
Clinging to what little hope I still have for survival,
I steel my mind in anticipation of the trials ahead. I
hold on for dear life, while the swelling and fading of
the sea takes control of my boat. Minutes pass like
hours, but still I hold on.
After an unperceivable length of time, the storm
subsides. The clouds dissipate to let rays of sunlight
shine through and bathe me in their warmth. Although
what I seek is still somewhere in the distance, my hope
has been restored. I have not yet failed, for my journey
has just begun...

Why Does Not Love Wilt

Why does not love wilt and die
from the bitter bite of hate,
though leaves brown when winter's nigh
and summer's warmth abates?
Why do hearts to ice not turn,
though the cold does grip them so?
Frost may form upon the fern;
love will never cease to grow.

What Is Sorrow?

What is sorrow?
It's waiting outside in the rain
for someone who won't show.
It's being unable to finally let go.

What is sorrow?
It's a life that remains untouched
by the beauty of love.
It's the lack of strength to rise above.

What is sorrow?
It's a cry that goes unanswered,
a cry that no one hears.
It's losing the ones that you hold dear.

What is sorrow?
It's looking at your life
and watching it come apart.
It's a broken, weeping heart.

Journey

My heart longs for the return
of someone I've never met;
for the love I've not yet found.
Though I do not know her name,
her face is very familiar--
I see it when I sleep.
Is she a mere fantasy,
born of a heartfelt longing?
Or am I peering into my future?
With my heart as my compass,
I wander through life,
looking for my other half.

Elusive Love

Lying in bed at the day's final hour, I am troubled by the solitude in which I once found comfort. The sense of security that I once felt has dissipated to reveal a desperation unlike any other.
As I close my eyes, I await sweet slumber and the freedom it brings from the troubled life I live. My consciousness fades and my heart takes flight, painting a beautiful scene of romance.
Relaxing under an old oak tree, I look to my soul mate lying next to me and take her hand in mine. We gaze into each other's eyes, conveying the unspoken desire within our hearts.
I look to the sky and can't help but notice the growing light from the afternoon sun, forcing me to turn away.
I am awakened by the morning light pouring through my window. It is then that I find myself lying in bed, staring at the empty space beside me once again.
