Choices

We can always make a buck,
but will it find us a true friend?
We can always fly a plane,
but will it fly as high as our imagination?
We can run to win that marathon,
but will we be happier than the person who just wants to finish the race?

We can drive home in record time,
but wouldn't we be happier going slower and enjoying the drive?
We can give our love a dozen roses,
but wouldn't a single wildflower we picked mean more to them?

Our life is filled with choices to make,
but we seldom look at the alternatives.
We run from here to there,
never taking the time to see what is between here and there.

Take the time to nourish the friend,
who will be there for you when you don't have a buck.
Let your spirit soar as high as your imagination,
and the world will be at your fingertips.
Run the race the best that you can,
but slow down, offer a hand to someone in need and you will be a true winner.

Walk instead of drive when you can,
take notice of the beauty of the world around you.
Give one flower with love,
and watch its blossom spread and grow more beautiful than a field of roses.

A choice made with a sincere heart will always be the right one,
meaning more than any other alternative.

Remember that on your tombstone it is not the date before or after the dash that counts,
it is what you did with your life between the dashes that will count the most.

The River

Know that as surely as the sun rises in the morning, to waken and warm a sleeping world,

The moon will follow in its place, its luminescence guiding us to our beds,

And the river will flow on.

That as surely as trees in the Spring give us an abundance of greenery to remind us of the coming summer,

The Fall will give us an artist's palette of color to warm us for the coming Winter,

And the river will flow on.

That as surely as man is born of woman, his entrance bringing cries of joy,

That man will leave this world, his exit bringing tears of love and remembrance,

And the river will flow on.

The river knows its beginning and knows it must flow on to meet its destiny, its end,

But its end is also a beginning, as the river flows into the sea to become part of a larger whole; life anew, stronger and more vibrant;

And the river will flow on.

Man also knows his beginning and knows his destiny will come to meet him as surely as the river flows; and knows that his end is but part of a larger beginning;

Man and the River, each flowing to meet their destiny;

Live life to the fullest and face your destiny with grace and serenity, secure in the knowledge, that like the river, your passing makes you part of a larger whole, and that as the strength of the goodness of your spirit flows through life, your spirit will live on after you.

Live long and breathe well.

About this poem:
I wrote this shortly after I moved from New Hampshire to West Virginia. I, at the time, lived in a motor home I had. I was staying in a mobile home park that was right next to a river. I listened to that river on a daily basis. I occasionally have moments when I like to ruminate on life and how it affects me, and, in one of those moments, wrote this.
