My 'Top 10' Fighter Aircraft List

I was asked by a few members (One of which left a comment.) to make a Top 10 Fighter Plane List. So once again here we go! Some of my personal favorites are here as well as some of your's! :) Enjoy!
1

The Supermarine 'Spitfire'

The Supermarine 'Spitfire'
This powerful single-engined fighter is Great Britain's most famous not to mention decorated 'Warbird!' There are many still flying today! The most recent appearance, the 2012 Olympic Games in London!
2

The North American P-51 'Mustang'

The North American P-51 'Mustang'
One of many 'Little Friends' to American Bombers the P- 51 Mustang took down more than its share of 'enemy bandits!' Like the Spitfire the Mustang was wicked fast and highly maneuverable making it the 'flying ace' of the skies! P-51s are still a thrilling site pleasing crowds at airshows worldwide.
3

The British Aerospace Harrier 'Jumpjet'

The British Aerospace Harrier 'Jumpjet'
The Harrier Jumpjet was the first truely successful V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) at the time. The Harrier gained much fame and 'earned' its fine reputation during the war in the Falkland Islands in 1982. The Harrier has four 'rotatable' jet nozzles that allow the plane to takeoff and land vertically! An amazing jet to watch. The 'jumpjet' was also featured in the hit video game 'GTA San Andreas' as the 'Hydro!'
4

The Lockheed F-117a 'Stealth' Fighter

The Lockheed F-117a 'Stealth' Fighter
Like its big brother the B-2 Stealth Bomber this plane is designed to be virtually 'invisible' to radar! It's distinctive shape and paint process aide in the cloaking ability. This jet is the jewel in the USAF's aeronautical crown!
5

The General Dynamics F-16 'Falcon'

The General Dynamics F-16 'Falcon'
Light, fast, and extremely deadly describes the F-16! This hot little bird is found in fighting forces the world over. For good reason it's easy to maintain, durable, and good 'bang' for the military buck!
6

The Lockheed-Martin F-22 'Raptor'

The Lockheed-Martin F-22 'Raptor'
Agility is the word of the day for this plane! Dubbed the most agile plane in the sky beating out the Russian 'Foxbat.' Outfitted with 'state-of-the-art' weaponry when the Raptor is on the scene best better believe someone's gettin' devoured!
7

The Curtiss P-40 'Warhawk'

The Curtiss P-40 'Warhawk'
A 'star' of earlier wars with its stellar performances day after day. No matter the takeoff point land or sea this plane got the job done, and brought the boys home to fight another day. One of the most recognizable planes in the sky with its signature 'sharkmouth' paint scheme!
8

The Lockheed P-38 'Lightning'

The Lockheed P-38 'Lightning'
An odd design when stacked up next to its stable mates. The P-38 had an extremely short fuselage, twin engines, and an at the time 'radical H-Shaped' tail. Well somehow this crazy 'mix' produced one of the most amazingly successful fighters in aviation history! The new design made the P-38 remarkably stable at the high speeds the twin powerplants produced. When this 'Lightning' struck you indeed went down in flames!
9

The Lockheed F-104 'Starfighter'

The Lockheed F-104 'Starfighter'
'Starfighter' great name for this jet! As you look at it, it really looks like a missle with wings tacked on. It flew like a missle true, but it also flew like no other which is why the F-104 was chosen for astronauts to train in. Definitely a high altitude flyer the Starfighter could quite literally fly to the 'edge' of space!
10

The North American F-86 'Sabre'

The North American F-86 'Sabre'
Enter the 'jet age!' Faster, higher, was the new order in aviation, and it was no different for military aviation. The F-86 was the Red, White, and Blue answer to the German Me-2 from Messerschmitt. Fast, agile, this jet not only was a military star, but actually 'paved' the way for successful commercial jet aircraft!

I guess anyone viewing my 'Top 10's knows I have an admiration for 'things with wings' to say the very least. If it's people, cargo, or bombs they carry I find airplanes fascinating. From the characteristics of flight to the various dimensions of airframe design! I guess that's why I'm in the business. :) I hope you've enjoyed this list also, Raytheon1!

Did everyone forget about the North American F-100 super sabres. In their day they could carry every weapon in the Air Force arsenal, including nukes. We called them the "lead sleds" because they had a poor glide ratio, for every one foot of glide they dropped ten feet. They helped get the job done in nam although a lot were lost there.

Comon ! Where is the MIG-35 ? sigh

Oh if my eyesight hadn't changed at 14 i would have been a pilot!

There are a few serious faults with the F-16 and the F-22 (which suffocates it's pilots). It appears the PAK-FA does work properly!

The F-35 is a turkey.....if it can take off.

The F-15E deserves a mention, though it's getting long in the tooth, and the Eurofighter. I agree with another comment earlier the BF109-K4 was every bit as good as a Spitfire, and having cannons could shred anything it shot at.

The "Bird of Prey D4/D9" was also a remarkable aircraft, as was the performance of the Mitshibishi Zero. The later was hampered by the lack of armor, which meant if a Hellcat got behind it, the poor pilot had little chance.

Id the ME-262 was produced earlier, and the German ministry converted production to the D4/D9, then daylight bombing of Europe would have to have been abandoned.

I have the Battle of Britain planes housed near me, and have a ME-109, and Spitfire fly over my house on a regular basis. They are truely objects of beauty, especially roaring in the air.

Nothing from Japan? Just sad. I'm not as informed as you but seen some great fighter planes look a like in some of the open base festa. Sorry for being partial about Japan. But I enjoyed the pics. Could be more enjoyable if you had something from Japan too.peace

Hi, there!
Just like to add the following:

The F-117 is no fighter at all, despite the F designation. It's a highly specialised attack aircraft.

The Russian Foxbat was not agile at all! It was conceived as an high speed interceptor.

As far as WW2 fighter go... the P-40 and P-38 are mediocre. And you should add the Bf109 or the Me262

Again the F-104 was a mediocre aircraft. The contemporary F-4 was much more important to all US services.

You definitely need to add Bf109, Hurricane, Me262, MiG-15, MiG-21, F-4, Mirage III, F-15, F/A-18, MiG-29 and Su-27.

Otherwise, great list mate.
Cheers!
