A lot of people,

A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That's why they don't get what they want.

Because when 'they' do, they get rebuffed. So they become 'the once bitten, twice shy' folks. Of course the longer that goes on for, the more difficult it becomes to break free. By that time I guess, those people have joined thew silent ranks of those who watch, but can no loner interact. My heart goes out to them all|!
I think both of you are right. Some have been hurt, and will will never try again. Some will recover and live a good life. And some have been fortunate enough to have never been hurt (very rare occurence). Most of us are somewhere in the middle, I venture. The fortunate ones are those who are able to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and try again.

Certainly, if we don't ask, we rarely get what we want. Sometimes we don't get what we want even if we do ask, but at least we tried. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Like this afternoon, I was riding down the sidewalk and saw this blonde angel on the sidewalk. She was waiting at the stoplight, but she was going a different direction from me. I almost said, "I hope you have a wonderful day today, sweet angel", but I didn't have the courage to say anything. Lost opportunities.
