Do those who teach tolerance, tolerant themselves?

Liberal secularists insist that tolerance is the highest virtue. But what they don't tell you what they mean by "tolerance." To them, tolerance doesn't simply involve treating those with different ideas respectfully and civilly. To them it means, affirming their ideas as valid, which Christians can't do without renouncing their own beliefs. However, they don't have such problems, since they reject the very idea of absolute truth and the law of non-contradition. He can just go on his merry way moralizing to everyone about tolerance and never having to explain the contradictions in his views.

Tolerance peddlers are further exposed when you consider that they simply will not practice what they preach-at least toward those annoyingly stubburn Christians.

They are absolutely unwilling to "tolerate" the Christian premise that Jesus Christ is the way,the truth, and the life. For them to acknowledge this would necessarily refute their concept of tolerance, which holds that all ideas are equally valid.

In their infinite resourcefulness, they carve out an exception to their demand for universal tolerance when it comes to their treatment of Christians.

For example, one secularist university administrator, disciplined a conservative professor for exposing her class to literature from a Christian viewpoint, which included an article about how teachers should approach homosexuality. The administrator exclaimed,"We cannot tolerate the intolerable."

You see,it's fairly easy for these types to free themselves from their indefensable postions. They simply move the goalposts. Talk about defining truth through power!

But the Christians"s belief that theirs is the one true religion doesn't make them intolerant of others or disrespectful of their right to believe and worship how they choose. Our modern culture is woefully confused about these destinctions, and they use the Christians confidence in their own belief system to paint Christians as intolerant of others with different views. Nothing can be further from the truth.

Besides for the record,Christanity is not the only religion with exclusive truth claims. All major religions(including secular humanists)have such claims.

Tolerance is a two way street and for the last 1000 years Christianity has never tolerated any opinion but it's own !

PS: If you are feeling the heat, then you know what your religion has been dealing out for the last milenium .

The total tolerance to everyone and everything is a hypocrite myth. Only the saints can be such. We are humans and have strong points on this and that. A healthy intolerance gives the balance needed and shows us as honest humans not as hypocrite fake saints. Also, we MUST be intolerant to some bad things in life. wave

The OP is correct. Jesus loves the sinner, but hates sin itself. Because we are supposed to emulate Jesus, we are admonished to love others but not their sin. This is where the world (non-Christians) get confused. The world assumes that our dislike of sin applies to the sinner, which is totally untrue.
The genuine rationalist does not think that he or anyone else is in possession of the truth; nor does he think that mere criticism as such helps us achieve new ideas. But he does think that, in the sphere of ideas, only critical discussion can help us sort the wheat from the chaff. He is well aware that acceptance or rejection of an idea is never a purely rational matter; but he thinks that only critical discussion can give us the maturity to see an idea from more and more sides and to make a correct judgement of it.
Nice to see us talking about and giveing understanding to each others thoughts which can be only good for all in the long run.Good reading all your views here. thumbs up wave

Huggermanforyou:

You made an interesting observation regarding the importance of making clear distinctions. For often in our culture, these distintions are blurred,by our ignorance or our rush to judgement of other people. Only when we are open to truth, can we see the difference.
I suppose one mans meat is anothers poisen, as the say. Debate is good we learn some from that and also how another thinks. We do not have to agree just listen and accept anothers way of thinking. I hope we are not expected to be robots and all think and do the same.
tolerance is like (I will put up with you) nothing wrong in that but me, acceptance that another has different view points to mine
and is right for them. But of course we are only humans with the herding instincts, intolerances, egos all that get in the way of true acceptance. The term poor mortals comes to mind.hug teddybear
My sister is a prime example of someone who rushes to judgment. My description of her is, "She rushes to judgment with too little information." She gets mad in an instant, yells and screams, swears, etc., even when she has way too little information to go on. An example would be, my alarm goes off at 7:00 am so I can get my kid off to school. I might have knocked on my kid's door right at 7:00. Half an hour later, sis would say, "Why haven't you knocked on the door?" That's judging from too little information.
