Language
I have read something interesting today in "Zwierciadlo", namely that the language you use determines how you express yourself. For example you may be more open in one language than in another. It is not new, there was something about it during my philosophy class at the university (was it Wittgenstein?), but it is for the first time that I read about it in a women's magazine.Personally, I seem to be more capable of expressing my feelings in English, which is sad because my native tongue is actually Polish but there it is. Apparently the language of your heart does not nessecarily have to be your native one. Also, I remember that whenever I dreamt in German I always have a row with somebody in that dream. I've never expressed love or compassion in German in my dreams. So what does it tell us? To be honest, I have absolutely no idea.
Oh, and the last point on that note. Whenever I get emotional in my group therapy sessions, I feel the urge to switch into English.
Well, it's been three paragraphs and I'm no wiser so I'll just stop right here.

We just think that we are talking in a different language as well as in the native.
But when we speak a different language we continue to to think in the native.

A lo mejor!
Actually I have never given my language usage much thought although, even being born in America and brought up in American schools, I sometimes switch the words as if I were speaking Spanish. I can't think of an example right now but when I do it and it doesn't sound correct I have to stop and think about what I just said or wrote. It makes me chuckle at myself.
Wee, it's been l & 1/8 paragraphs. time for some chocolate!
I think there's a lot of truth in that first sentence of yours. The language we speak definitely affects how we communicate. I find myself coming out with all sorts of philosophical thoughts in Spanish. I think the language lends itself to it. I just use phrases that, when I translate them back into English, I couldn't imagine saying.
Here's a nice phrase from French which doesn't easily translate.
L’esprit de l’escalier!
I've heard it translated as 'staircase wit', but I don't think the English language does it justice.
It's the idea of thinking of a great response to another person's argument as you are walking away! We all know how that one feels, and now we can express it too!
I don't remember ever dreaming in English...
Also, I have no idea how to respond to all comments, what this page lacks are "likes" and comments directly under other people's comments...
