I think reading. You concentrate a lot more when reading than when you are listening to someone talking. English is my second language and I learned it mostly through reading as I don't have that much contact with English speaking people.

Ikala We learn it in school. Because of all the different languages in our country they use English as the main language in the workplace. It is only in rural areas where people don't really understand or speak English.

In my opinion, people who is strong in speaking usually is not strong in writing and the other way around. But, there are still some people who are good at both at the same time. I agree with others who have commented above that reading comprehension is most likely helping you to influence your writing ability. There are many ways to improve it. I found chatting with native-speaker (or non-native speaker with good ability in the language you are currently learning)quite helped me to improve my writing ability which I did for years. Anyway, people will find their own most comfortable method to practice their writing ability.

Listening comprehension is quite helping you to improve your speaking skill.

Use popular movies with subtitles if necessary, later when the skills look good, popular movies without subtitles. As someone else said the reading is important too. Use popular novels, Stephen King, Robin Cook, folks like that. Have the students stand and read a page or two aloud. They will get better. They will also see the grammar structure.
