earthquakes

Well we had a large quake, early hours of the morning. One of many we have had. By the time that you connect what's happening, you just don't connect the dots that maybe you should make a run for it.frustrated

Just one of those little reminders, we get in the world grin

I am not ashamed to admit, I was terrified, but due to the late hour I froze......I am fully expecting the big one again... They have got stronger of late! and Closer together. I wonder of the plates are moving again Kauri? I wonder of Asia, are going to get another quake opposite us ?moping
Oo I see it was 8km Depth, 10 km away, rated as Strongdoh frustrated
I don't envy your situation there, it been a while since we had one & that was minor compared to yours but still scary when you see the floor & roof moving uh oh wine

@ twazzle Thanks we are ok..

Its moments like these you reach out to neighbours family and the internet and Viber etc are good, its a fast way to check if everyone is ok. Mobile Networks fail !

@ Daniel, Thanks, It's just another of many, to test us....Makes me think there's something happening on the other side of the earths plate.
Zmounttain, they dont hit the news until the buildings fall here....
We have them everyday, so It's when we get a big shake we take notice, last big one which was of any note was rated Strong 2 weeks ago also shallowfrustrated

Life goes on grin
Everyday doh I'd move professor the last big one here was about 120 years ago, I only know because any big event here means that date becomes a holiday for evermore laugh rolling on the floor laughing

I live in a boat parked on land , the quake , wasnt much , my cat makes the boat shake more when she runs up the ladder ...wave

would have thought after around 200 odd shakes you'd be use'd to them by now
These quakes hit hard and fast, Fun, and you don't get used to them, you get sick of them.
I'm in a boat with builge keels so even if a truck drives past or a strong puff of wind makes it rock abit , even the odd earthquake or 2 .....laugh laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Africa is pretty stable but unfortunately the people are not very stable.
funlaugh, read stuff nz website this was rated as strong, we get small ones, this was not small.frustrated
we have had around 7,000 shakes in 3 years, when we say its a biggie , its a biggiegrin
ekself, I hear you.
Yeah! I know what you mean. We get them everyday in California. Probably about 200 or so but they are so small you don't feel them usually. Maybe a little but not much.

California is scheduled for a big one but it hasn't happened.
@ Ed, we(NZ)are overdue for a big quake as well from our Alpine Fault along our range of Southern Alps. Christchurch's current quakes are all local, some right under the city.
Ed, I know you guys get it bad too,

Thanks Kauri for putting it into words grin I think you are right, its getting stronger of late. I think another big one is coming.
Hi Ms T,

I think a big quake in the Alps won't have the same effect on Christchurch as the September 2010 quake because of the distance we are from the Alps. Christchurch will continue to shake for a while yet. I still think a big one might hit the Tai Tapu/Prebbleton area.
moping Kauri, ahh thats pretty close...

why not central downtown again? The one today was in what they refer to as the gap, between the plates?which is why I felt it.
Yes downtown again eventually, I think the gap is where the action will be to release pressure on unknown faults there.
I guess the Maori had not much problems with earthquakes.

Build a Pa with Punga. wave

Good luck.sad flower
Stringman thanks, that was really interesting. I had heard of the ring of fire. Does Hawaii feature in there, with all the Volcanic activity? I never knew about Alaska etc. Hmm out earthquake did so much devastation, 2 years ago as it was the most lateral movement very near to the earth that was so damaging.I had no idea, that the San Andreas fault extended so far across the USA? even towards Memphisconversing
Guadal, thanks, yes the Punga's would be on idea, not very sturdy though.grin
@toless

I would think if there was a really big quake, Hawaii they may have to worry about a tsunami and more volcanic eruptions.
@stringman, yes Volcanic, and tsunami, would be horrible.

Kauri, thanks, yes that puts it in perspective, for sure.
Another one, moderate, 2 miuntes ago. Kauri, think you are right!
