Smoking

A recent blog got me thinking. I have never smoked cigarettes, and never will. I know plenty of smokers, and I don't have any problem with them, it's their choice, and doesn't affect the person they are. But why do people smoke? I can't think of any good reason. Lets weigh up the pros and cons of smoking....

Cons:-
Expensive
Antisocial
Bad breath
Bad teeth
Discoloured skin
Pollution of air for others
Addictive
Health risks (too many to list)
Risk of premature death

Pros:-
................? confused

That's where you can help me. What are the pros exactly? I don't mean why you continue to smoke, it's addictive so of course if you're a smoker it will calm you, because it takes away your desire for a smoke. But what are the pros you considered before you took up the habit?

I'm not being judgemental here, I genuinely want to understand why people would take up such a harmful habit.

Incidentally, I know what you're thinking. What's that photo of me on the beach looking like someone out of The "A" Team with a fat cigar? You have a point!!! Cigars are a different matter though. I have smoked maybe 5 or 6 cigars in my life, the smoke is not inhaled, and it's a way of celebrating. On this occasion I was seeing my brother in Australia for the first time in 7 years, and we were celebrating the birth of three children between us grin

Hi Silver...

I am smoking but I dont drink alcohol....
many peoples do not smoke but they drink a lot alcohol...
I also wonder abt that fact... why do they drink alcohol? I can't think of any good reason too.. confused
I know both of habit is dangerous for health, but which one is more dangerous for health?
Smart...I agree, why drink excessively? I drink socially, the nature of my job excludes any other form of drinking. But drinking alcohol is social. A night out with the boys, a glass of wine with dinner, Champagne to see in the new year.....I still don't see a social benefit to smoking cigarettes. There are many parallels between drinking and smoking, and I can't really argue against them. The difference to me is that I can understand the desire to start drinking....but not smoking. So, why did you put a cigarette in your mouth for the first time?

...but did you inhale??!! I cannot explain the reason for starting smoking now at this day and age...but from what people tell me young girls or women smoke so that they don't gain weight/eat!!! Oh no not this subject again!!!
DON'T GO THERE!!!!! wow rolling on the floor laughing

Gotta go to work....I'll catch up with this later.
when i was in bad time and wanna run away from problem, I decided to smoke to forget it since it will not make me drunk and unconscious.
I know it is not good and try to reduce.....

have a nice day... and good luck teddybear
Who told you you get calmer by smoking? That is not true, that is one of the lies the tobacco companies has filled us with for many, many years... I know for sure I am much more calm now then I used to be when I smoke. I've been a non smoker for 5 years now, and will never, ever go back to that disgusting habit. But I do not drink either, so I do agree with Smartasss in her question why do you drink, and why do you think drinking is more healthy than to smoke, cause it is NOT! I think both is not good for your health!
Now I can agree with you....what the hell are young people thinking when they start smoking in this day and age when it is so uncool and expensive
Redex....yes, that's what I thought. The glamourous approach by advertisers. Thanks for your input :-)
Smart....thank you, and good luck cutting back. You CAN do it :-)
GoDaniel....good for you! You're absolutely right of course, but I love a beer when the match is on....! Each to their own thumbs up
Ekself....an agreement! Woohoo! Let's drink to that!! Thanks for your input :-)
KNenagh....you share my habituals! A colleague of mine gave up smoking through hypnotherapy, total success, no side effects. Then, 3 years later, decided to start smoking again. Go figure confused

By the way, you're in Aachen? That's pretty close by!
Haha!!! Exactly....you need your own motivation to give up!!! Cheers Ded! cheers
Having a drink a day, especially a small glass of wine, has health benefits.

A cigarette a day can still give you lung cancer, emphysema, allergies and make life shorter for you!!
Ed.....I agree. Also, it seems drinking in moderation is not a necessity for most. For example, I am not drinking alcohol for January and February as part of a detox thingie. I miss it, but only because I enjoy having a beer with the footy occasionally. It doesn't trouble me. I don't think smokers can do that so easily. Maybe I'm wrong.....dunno
Hi Silverlining, I'm originally from Aachen but living in Ireland, just back for a week from spending Christmas at home. wave
