Obama today announced governmental financing for stem cell research. He also spoke of Christopher Reeve (the actor, among thousands of others, who died being denied of treatment which could have saved him by Bush's administration).

Obama had also acted on the Guantanamo problem. But these are problems with differing complexities.

And yet some 55% to 65% of Americans believe in creationism and are totally benighted. Will Obama survive despite this mudslide in his backyard?

I think I will be rejoicing with some champagne this evening!

laugh

ps: so who is against this...declare yourself.

Well darl, I dont think I would put much faith in a Politician, never mind one who made his living as a Chicago lawyer ...

Stem cell research? I`m against it, for my own plebian, and probably ignorant reasons - part of which has deep suspicions over what exactly happens to all the aborted foetuses ......and the controlled medical measures involved in this new and thriving practice ........ and stupid things like that.

With the ease that the above mentioned are disposed of ... is there any particular reason why humans have this need to prolong certain other humans lives?

With the dire poverty in huge parts of the world ..... is this stem-cell research/treatment going to bring relief to those hungry ones? Or do they still have to carry on selling their own kidneys to survive their poverty?

Or is this wonderful medical breakthru sort-of only for the wealthy elite?... like ex Superman movie heroes?

Well said Smoky.

Stem cell research! Just been in the papers too that some quack will be offering a service where parents would be able to choose the physical features of their child.

Well that is until someone says Oooops!! How did that happen?! And it all goes horribly wrong. Then what?

I think there's a limit to how much man can tamper with nature. Personally I think that spiritually proloning a life superficially in this manner is not unlike someone taking his life before his time is up. Perhaps what is needed is a more light hearted look at life and accepting our true mortal nature, and that eventually we have to cross over when our time is up. Accepting this fact leads to a much happier and peaceful existence.

There is good news out there, smoky. The issue of foetuses may be a thing of the past. I won't presume to be able to enlighten this community using correct technical scientific terminology. Suffice to say, here in Aussie Land, and I would expect elsewhere also, scientists have developed a way of obtaining stem cells not from foetuses, but from the body's own stem cells. They had a program showing how they are doing this with the canine community, where the dog's own stem cells are used and in this instance, injected directly into the arthritic joints. Within a few weeks of this procedure, the previously almost incapacitated dogs, were bounding around full of their previous life and energy, and pain free.

So, I personally think these are exciting times and so many neurological disorders and organ transplants may relatively soon, be a thing of the past. bouquet

I think it is pretty useless Venere yo expect enthusiasts at CS for stem cell research. Half have never heard of it and the other half consider it anti-christ.

Well my darling, you brought the subject up.

Why bring it up on a site devoted to us bunch of plebs if you werent interested in our biggoted and ignorant views?

You see, you got to realise, as humans we are all vastly different from each other in our outlooks and views of life.

In my own opinion, people with your viewpoint is what I call brain-washed tunnel vision - you believe what you are told to believe. Whereas a large majority out here believe what their intuition/guts/feelings tells them. Yes, silly I know, but thats how humans are. Not everyone aspires to artificially extending their lives, or agrees that the petri-dish culture is preferable to the human foetus stem-cells.

What scientists are doing, according to Venera, is treating disease. What they should be asking, in my opinion, is WHAT is causing this disease?

If something in your vehicles engine keeps blowing up, do you keep replacing that ruined part? ... or do you ask WHAT is causing it to blow up? ... and fix the Problem?

The millions wasted on stem-cell research, like cancer "research" could be better spent invested in the growth of clean nutritious food - not bigger factories producing artificial boxed/canned/bottled "food" for the masses who become the guinea pigs of the scientists.

If you consider people using their own brains to do their thinking, or putting value on nutrition, to be Anti-Christ, then, actually, in my opinion, you have the mentality of a boiled egg.

And .. with tears in my eyes, on bended knees .. I ask this question:

Why are we extending lives?

One half of the planet is trying to extend lives.

The other half of the planet is starving and running out of water.

In parts of this other part - there are people selling their own kidneys to afford food.

There are places where there is NO food to buy, and no ability to grow it.

Kids with extended bellies and malnourished brains are dying in poverty. The "lucky" ones will grow up with diminished brains. To become future leaders of their countries.

And here we have advocates for saving and extending the lives of a chosen few who care nothing for those living in misery.

And I do not count the millions of little monkeys wired into wire envelope cages waiting their turn for injections and vivisection - minus anaesthetics, so some old has-been superman comic book hero can have his life extended, or some movie star have her arthritic fingers fixed, or a geriatric old millionaire can get a brand-new hard-on.

And all the doggy lovers out there ..... go try and check out how many dogs are used for these same experiments. They are bought up in the third-world countries from back-yard mass breeders... destined for laboratories.

Be warned though - you cannot get anywhere near these laboratories... they are High Security.

We can shout we can stamp our feet but we have not a snowball in hell chance of changing the events in the world or even if goverments fall the next one will be just as corrupt as the last so why do we bother because it makes us feel better we feel by expressing our opinion in public we feel we are seen to be doing our bit,,,, makes you sick dont it to feel that helpless,,

No, I do not stamp my feet, shout or get excited over these things. I merely state my opinion.

I am fully aware that what the small-person has to say has no effect whatsoever on governmental decisions or scientific experiments - they will always keep going their own way.

So I do not upset myself with them. I do not feel helpless. Because the sphere of my life is around me, and I am the one making my decisions on how I handle it.

One thing to bear in mind is that Everything Begins with a Thought. Thoughts become the written Word. The Written Word becomes a Deed. And then the Deed is done and has become a Fact.

If you doubt that scenario .... then just witness everything in daily life. Before anything can happen it has to first begin as a Thought in your mind.

Now ... if the Entire World had the same Thought ... it Could become a Fact eventually. But that is out of my control - my instructions are to concentrate on my own small Universe over which I have control.
