Folks..

I've a wee Q...A close friend of mine has another friend who is terminally ill with stomach cancer..

The person is on the board of Govs-PTA at their local school. Now the BG-PTA have decided to have a fund raising-charity evening for their friend. They asked the school to support them but the Head said No..

Some of the BG-PTA, wrote to some companies to and asked for a 'donation'..Now they put on their letter that it wasnt school connected but that it was for someone connected to the school.

ANd one of the companies has complained to the school. SOme of the BG-PTA are going to resign if the school dont support them.

My Q is...Two-three fold..Should the school support a member of the PTA whos dying of cancer..Where the PTA member rght to mention it that they are unofficialy from the PTA..Are the members right in resigning in protest..

~With due respect to the PTA members loyalty to their friend, it really has nothing to do with the school - which presumeably has its own fund-raising problems. The resignations are unreasonable as it implies blackmailing the school into supporting an outside cause and it harms the kids and nobody else!

Hi Phoenix,

Sorry about your friendsad flower

What a sad story from the outset. And a highly emotionally laden one, too. Based on the limited information (and appreciate it is due to confidentiality) you have provided, I am unsure as to what kind of support the PTA members seek. Unfortunately, it's the Head's call whether to support them or not. The PTA is obliged to accept that.

The other thing is that they stated in their letter that the issue wasn't connected with the school. It seems they used school letterhead though. That is not appropriate. They should have perhaps simply mentioned in passing that the person involved was at that school, but to make it clear they were acting independently and as private citizens only. Definitely no school letterhead if that was the case.

There are many avenues for fund raising. In this case, it seems they may be acting in haste, maybe through a sense of panic or urgency. Certainly without a clear plan. They might be better placed if they approached an experienced fund raising organisation for advice.

No, I don't think anything will be achieved by resigning. They can't expect the school to support them, though as I said, am not sure what kind of support they seek, as it is not a school matter.

Phoenix,

i agree with the above and mention in addition the legal aspects od if school letterhead was used and the fact that the pta are threatening to resign etc etc. PTA are replaceable, so they dont achieve any objective by using blackmailing or threatening behaviour.

Still it isnt nice to hear from the school that they are not going to spport a memebr of their own pta in these times of distress etc.

Ja, sadly, everything in life is compartmentalised.

Change the circumstances to get a clearer view..... The person is getting married. Would the school raise funds for their wedding? Having a baby - would the school raise funds for a big gift?

However .. the School could raise funds IF a percentage was going to either the friend in need, or to the school. Just the same as with any charity event.

Resigning in these circumstances is an emotional decision - and emotional decisions are made without level thinking.

Obviously, connected to the school, more funds could be raised. Having a sit-down discussion with the Head could find a solution? (where both parties stand to gain something from the event?)

Its good old fashioned rally of support for someone in need and two cheers for that. It's what's living in a caring community is all about.

Shame on the company which made noise against the initiative when afterall, if I got it right, the PTA members did quite rightly mention that it was not an official school initiative. It could have simply ignored the letter and threw it with the rest of the junk mail.

As for the school and the community it serves, perhaps if all sat down and sought ways to help they would all be richer in the end, and someone would have found the moral support even more uplifting in going through difficult times.

Hi folks..

I think I can clear some points up..My mucker on the BG-PTA, didn't use official school paper. They just mentioned that the person who is ill..Is a valued member of the PTA.

Whats pissing my mucker off is, the school wont move their butt to support a school parent, on the PTA and is very shortly going to leave a father with kids.

I guess its more off a moral, whats right thingy. Yep, they agree it is 'blackmail'..But its only 'cause the school wont do a thing..I guess its;where's the sense of community? Helping..then again I got my education from my parents...School taught me the A,B, C...
