jlw45: like i said, people would be healthier for it...the vitamin content would be at higher levels being vine ripened rather than shelf ripened...japan has the lowest rate of cancer in the world...and one studt suggested that it was due to the way they market their produce...everybody buys their produce from the street vending markets...and the produce is picked that mourning and is vine ripe....where as ours {and the U.S. has the highest cancer rate} is picked on the west coast and packed to sell on the east coast and visa-versa...not to meantion they have to have a shelf life...so, alot of their vitemin potentual is still on the vine and not in the produce we buy at the market...growing your own veggies can only be a good thing...people are so fast food oriented, and spoiled...we could all use some lessons in slowing it down ,just a little bit...

Indyfella: you'd have to consider the energy consumed tilling, planting, maintaining and harvesting. it could be a zero sum game.

What? Most people could use the excercise! That would make it a double health benefit. wink

With the coming Depression, most people will NEED one!

Will be interesting to see what Obamanation does with this advice. I'm guessing they won't do it, since that would actually set a good example for people.

During WWII, in addition to the victory gardens, they asked people to buy a gun and help patrol the borders. Hmmm.....now they want to take our guns.

Just to let you all know, some people already have gardens every year.

And preserve the bounty by canning and freezing.

And keep livestock for meat & eggs.

It has nothing to do with "energy" or the present administration.

It has to do with lifestyle and self-sufficiency.

Very true, I planted a garden because I enjoyed it, even though it was way cheaper and easier to go out and just buy what I needed.

I once planted a garden to grow tomatos. Each tomato ended up costing me about $40.00 each. I guess I need to be educated on the economics of being a farmer. At this rate I could personally cause the depression to come on all by myself.

I loved in France going out into the garden and picking my own lemons, baby tomatoes and herbs etc for the salads etc...

Tastes so much better when you have grown them yourself...

I grow about 100 heirloom tomato plants organically and depending on the year, get 50-75 pounds of tomatoes per plant. One thing I have found out from growers in the south is that temperatures over 95 degrees for any period of time will force the plants to abort blossums and intense sun anywhere will result in deformaties and splits. In areas where high temperatures are the norm, use shading material (available at garden centers) to reduce the intensity of the sun and keep the plants well watered. You should also make sure your soil is clean and do not grow tomatoes on the same soil more than once every 4 or 5 years. Being in close proximity to walnut trees will also result in little or no yield.

I started doing this in the early 90's, because I felt a need to be more self sufficient, less dependant on the government(farmers get tons of subsidies), have a healthier lifestyle and actually enjoy life. I found that I can have the same standard of living, albeit not all the toys, and do it on far less income than what was previously required.
When I started doing this, many called me a radical hippy type and now they are asking me how to do it.
