i know every one has thier own way of preparing dishes and and serving them. i was raised with cornbeef and cabbage served as a stew with small irish potatoes in the mix. i moved to ca. some years ago and spied it on the menu and my mouth was watering but when i came it was sliced cernbeef with boiled cabbage on the side. talk about disapointing. how do you like it?
I'm cooking it in a crock pot right now....turnip and carrots layered with the corned beef on top. Red potatoes with the cabbage around the sides went into pot after a couple of hours of cooking. Now it will cook until the corned beef is tender.

swounds goob never had it wth turnips have to try it
druidess6308: The same as you, Cas...as a stew with the potatoes in it. I haven't had it in a long time. Now you've got me salivating for it.
Ah, that's okay...just brings back memories. This, and liver and onions, were foods I only got to eat at my paternal grandparents' house once a year when we visited them. My mother refused to cook them, even though my dad loved them.
I can cook the liver and onions, but have never made the Irish stew myself. I'll have to do it some day.

Have never heard of it served as a stew. Here we have it sliced with cabbage and potatoes on the side, often served with parsley sauce.
The best way I like cornbeef and cabbage is at somebody's home and not feeding it to me. Sorry I hate this stuff. I can't stand the smell of it cooking either. This is something my Mother put on the kitchen table and I had to sit there for hours until I ate it..... Oh the childhood memories.....

The same way you do. If I didn't have the flu right now, that's exactly what we'd be having tonight but I don't think my stomach could handle it right now. Happy St. Patty's Day Everyone!
Just plain and simple..... simmer "thin cut brisket" corned beef for aprox 4 hours, (don't like the "thick cut brisket" add the cabbage and red unpeeled potatoes approx 55 minutes prior to the 4th hour and melt some butter in a separate small pot.
When done, slice up the corned beef, I skip the cabbage cause I'm not partial to it, a couple potatoes and then drizzle with melted butter. Delicious! My Dad also likes cabbage and has mustard on the side with his meal.
