Earth Hour will be observed by the world to save energy as well as environment on March 28. The people will be observing the Day by switching off all the lights and electrical appliances for an hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. As per World Wide Fund for Nature (India), this year 50 lakh citizens of 377 cities from 74 nations are participating in this initiative. Earth hour is not about a quantitative measure about saving electricity but a powerful symbol for the fact that its possible to take action against climate change. It is to bring about awareness about the increasingly growing problem of climate change and to subsequently make changes in lifestyle that lead to wiser energy use. If I turn off my computer and television then I must read but if I turn off my lights I can not read. So the only option left is to drive around in my car but I think driving around will do more harm to the environment than turning off my lights.
Earth hour is a gimmick and actually may do more harm than good. People are not going to sit around in the dark doing nothing. They probably will do things which cause more damage to the environment than the things they would normally do.
The money, time, and resources used promoting this event could be been better used if applied to technologies which help cut energy use.
Also, let us not forget the argument which says global warming is a myth. This argument grew stronger in 2008 because the world's average temperature actually declined.

Try using the term climate change rather than global warming. I dont know how things are in your part of the world but we have seen major changes in the weather patterns here in Australia. Its really quite concerning.

Go for a walk or join in on any activities that are happening in conjunction with this. It's not about actually saving energy for one hour but to draw attention to it.

Making the general public and kids more environmentally aware is far more productive than spending one hour wringing hands hoping technology will save us.

Heck, I'm no saint and am certainly with you and don't recycle as I find it easier to pay the extra ten cents a bottle but saving energy and recycling certainly can't hurt. And, taking my bike out for a wheel around the park with a drink in a water bottle for an hour isn't going to kill me.

The Earth has continuous climate change. Warming and cooling has gone in cycles since the Earth was formed.
If you ask people to shut off their appliances you must have a specific goal in mind. You can't be general and just say "climate change." Climate change how? Hotter? Colder? More extreme? Different than what's happened the last million years?
Would be better to just say Earth Day's purpose is to cut back on the use of non renewable energy and to cut back on the pollutants in the air. Almost everyone agrees on the necessity of these actions. Not everyone agrees on the impact of climate change. When you use the words "climate change" you politicalize Earth Day and turn many people off.
I wonder how many places will end up without electricity when people start flicking on lights, turning on TVs and other appliances, with that huge sudden drain on the grid.
Some might have Earth Night, or even a few Earth Days.
More likely in countries with older lines and transmission capabilities, like Canada and the US out east.

Totally 'cool' - I wonder whether the effect will show from space and if any aliens notice and wonder:
KuddlyKasia: ........... and turn many people off.
Even better - I know some people I'd just love to turn off for an hour or maybe even two............ some people just seem to be a waste of reseources, but then I might get turned off and that just wouldn't do - forget it!
Well, I'm keeping my lights on. I just bought those new energy saving bulbs which last a zillion hours. They were three times as expensive and I'll be damed if I'm going to putter around in the dark or ride my bike in 30 degree weather because some people in Australia are cold, or hot, or whatever. I bought the energy efficient bulbs, I did my part.
Wait....there....I just set my computers battery to energy efficient mode and I only flashed once when I used the bathroom. I've done all I wish to do.

I always tell my women to turn the lights off - I hate being laughed at when I drop my pants!

Compact flo's, or LEDs?
The Canadian government has done all out thinking for us dumb Canucks once again. They've outlawed incandescent bulbs, and mandated the use of compact fluorescent bulb. They forgot they contain mercury, and are difficult to recycle, if there even was a facility to actually recycle them. I guess they like the idea of more mercury in the landfills and atmosphere. Not to mention, those bulbs don't fare well in cold climates, they like to break.

Candles are cool - and if you've quit smoking you have some nice burning by-products to breathe in!

I actually prefer a lamp that burns seal blubber. After all seals are a renewable resource. That and with all the polar bears disappearing, there will be way too many of them anyway.
Ok - so we are all going to turn off our lights for ONE hour local time on 28th March at whatever time it was in the OP, gently squidge a nice fatty ball of seal blubber and hope that when we turn the lights back on that 'she' doesn't making 'oink!' 'oink' noises and wants to play ball - right?
