It seems to me that Detroit should be thriving since they've got a Dem governor and haven't had a republican mayor in over 50 years. What's up? rolling on the floor laughing

Jan1305: Indy. statistics mean zilch. They can be twisted to mean whatever you want.

What are you trying to "prove" here?

I think what he is saying Jan is this...

I think the key point here to note is between one quarter and one third of people within these states are living below the poverty lines.

To say one in three people maybe officially in poverty in a country where it claims to be the land of opportunity is shall we say a disgrace at best.

I'll add that having the highest number of democrats in their cities is why they always elect a democratic mayor. I had a feeling it had to do with mayors of these cities...but went with what would dictate that fact. laugh

Nailed it pretty good, eh? laugh I know how you feel on this because we're pretty similar in our views, Indy. handshake

A point well taken. No one is forced to stay in a "poverty pocket"...no visas are required to move across state lines.

i did not read this whole thread, so, i am sorry if i am off base. but, IN MY EXPERIENCE/OBSEEVATION (and my job), the reason a lot of people qualify as low income is because no one marries anymore. kids are brought in by single moms on welfare. it is more profitable. dads may or may not be in the picture. but if they are not, usually a working boyfriends is. many low income people have other income, whethere they live with their boyfriends or work under the table.

i live in one of the poorest cities in the nation (per these statitics), yet, the shopping malls are packed, there are waiting lines in the nicer resterants, and everyone has an SUV. I honestly do not see too many people really struggling. but i suppose it depends on what you consider struggling.

i would love to know the common theme as i need to go to sleep, gotta get up at 430 am for work.
