rasgumby: I worked in nursing home for 6 years,
This is nothing uncommon.
but I wouldn't be surprised if it is staff. just hard to say.

what relation is the person suspected of taking the $$$$ ?
how exactly does the man feel about this happening?

as far as getting $$$ out of his account to go shopping....just don't get the cash out till he is ready to go shop.easiest solution.

if need be, he can request that these people not be allowed into the nursing home.

myself...
I would have the home call the police.
they can do either of 2 things.
1. set up a camera to catch whomever it is
2.forget what it is called, but there is a powder that they can put on bait money, then when it is stolen, they make everyone in question put their hands under a black light,, their hands will glow from the powder.

Myself, I just can't stand a thief.. I don't care who it is

The camera might be a bit tricky but the powder is a great idea. thumbs up

DUBLINGUY1973: So let me get this straight, they think because they are related by blood, that automtically entitles to this man's money?

Seems like they are just interested in the money rather than caring about their relative.

If this man is thinking straight, he will disinherit them and they won't get a dime after he's gone.

Sorry. Gold diggers just really make me

I would agree with you BUT...
I really dont think you understand what it is like in a nursing home...
most of these people dont have any visitors at all, is such a sad situation.
but most often these people in the home will let it continue just to have some company.
but as soon as the $$ is gone.. they stop coming to visit.

but.. if people are stealing from old folks in a nursing home.. you can bet they are stealing from others as well,
they need to be caught.

Let the Social Services director of the nursing home know what is happening. They can fix this.

wave Hi Ras. That is a good idea for sure. I didn't know this relative was in a home, so I am the same as you as far as knowing about staff stealing!

Thanks Ras, but I know it's these relatives. Happened to me a long time ago & I called his bluff. Got my money back. So I know he has no conscience.

I go to visit him every other weekend & take him out for dinner. I buy his cigarettes, clothes & other necessities, as well. But this cash he gets out is actually supposed to be for such necessities. I'm not supposed to touch his bank account. I have to account for all money coming out of his personal account... not patient funds.

I just typed up an email (haven't sent it yet) to one of the thieves (remember, it's a couple) & told her that if it doesn't cease IMMEDIATELY I'll have to bring authorities into it. And I let her know that staff has verified that he's been there to 'visit' several times. Should I send it?

Well, you can solve this yourself by handing out money when needed only and getting receipts for everything and making sure you see the merchandise.

Not a good idea to send it yet, you might only be giving them warning,
go to the home and talk yo the directer, let them get the police involved.

but also.. almost all nursing have each resident sign a warning form.. not to keep cash on hand.
even if these people are stopped.. it is a really bad idea to keep cash there.
anyone can take it,

sweetowen: What would you do if you found out that one of your close relatives was stealing money from another close, invalid relative?

If you found out a family member was molesting your niece, would you hesitate to turn him in?

You turn in the thief to the police or collect evidence and confront them, family member or not. And if anyone sees that as "disloyalty" or "hurting a family member" (in this case, the thief), what about the victim? They're not family?

One never has to apologize for honesty or ethical behaviour, even if it pisses people off or they shun you. One does have to apologize for silence and for doing nothing.

As his Power of Attorney and Legal Guardian you have a responsibilty to him. Only other option is to turn a blind eye. Sounds harsh but those are your choices no easy way to deal with it, you have to do what you believe to be right.

Well, what would you want done if you were the person that was the victim of the theft? If it were me, I would want the stealing to stop.

Confrontation would be my first step. If that did not bring remedy, I would then let the victim know what is going on.

Protect your family...protect the innocent.

What does it take to drive this point homedoh

NO CASH,, NO CASH, NO CASH!!!!!

put it in patient account, take it out *only when needed* and only as he walks out the door to spend it!!!

someone in a nursing does not need cash while in the home..he can't spend it there so why does he need it in hand. at most a dollar to get a soda,, which he can go to the office and get it anytime.

Good point thumbs up

Sweet, I wouldn't send the email yet as someone said, you could be just warning them. The theft could stop for a while and then when they think the trail has run cold, they could start all over again.

The other thing is you have to protect yourself too. If these people turn nasty, you shouldnt have to deal with that alone.

Ras, patient funds is NOT open on Sundays... or any day during the weekend, which is when I can visit him. They're open during my working hours. And he has rightful access to these funds... but they do monitor how much.

This is a "government" nursing home, shall I say?

You have to call Adult Protective Services in your community. It is a criminal offense to steal from the elderly or an invalid. Look in the local government section of your phone book or online for this office. Misusing, mismanagement or theft of funds of another person who is an invalid or even not aware that money is being siphoned off is illegal.
Don't wait, make the call.

The other thing i wanted to say is that it is very important to get concrete proof because the last thing you need is them to make out like the old man is losing his mind or try and turn it around on you and make out like you are the one stealing from him and not them. People like that will do anything to save their own skins!

Oh, I didn't realize that he was in a nursing home and this is occuring. I thought that he was in his own home and this was occurring and there was a visiting nurse to tell you about this.

You do need to talk to the Social Service Director at the nursing home and let them know what is occuring. If they do not take action, then you can either call call the omsbudman who will speak to the resident in question and then you can call the state. For us, this would be the Ohio Dept of Health which does all the nursing home surveys. This theft of a resident's funds is a very serious issue. The state does not take kindly to a nursing home dusting such a serious offense under the table if it is indeed occurring and the resident is telling that it is occuring. The number to reach your state for complaints into a nursing home will be located on the state surveys that must be posted in an area for visitors to review. It will also give you all the list of violations and corrections for that year.
I am a long term care nursing home nurse who has worked in this field for 20 yrs. Don't confront the persons who are taking the money whatever you do.

I have seen the state come in unannounced on a complaint several times over the years. The state takes complaints from patients or consumers very seriously and does follow up.

Hope this information helps you Sweetowen.
