What I normaly do with my son who is 8, I ask him what he would like to do for his birthday. Wether he wants a party or just spend time with me and close family. Normaly he likes to spend the day either bowling or to the indoor amusement park we have here. One year it was just me and him and we went out for dinner and a movie.
As for gifts I normaly take him to Toys R Us and let him pick something.

How about a swimming party? If its an outdoor pool it normally will have an area that you can bring your own food and drinks ... and its safe because there are lifeguards.

i think the chucky cheese thing is a good idea i lived with a family for a year while i finished my last year of high school and they took their son to chucky cheese and it was just the family and me and 2 aunts 2 uncles and one set of grandparents. or see what he is really interested in and get him something related to that. or let him have 2 or 3 friends over for a sleep over and get a couple of movies and away they go.
