They can Work and they Do, if two people are willing to work hard at it. They involve Compromise and Communication.

But they can and DO work. I depends on how badly a couple wants to mske it work.

PILOLO: Nothing is impossible. A LDR can only work if both parties involved are willing to work at making it a success. It does involve a lot of hard work, commitment, trust and openness. Moreover, the onus is on the 2 people involved to have a genuine interest in making it a success. It's neither for the faint-hearted nor somebody with the mind-set of a country bumpkin.

sambhava: Long distance relationships work perfectly when both partners hate each other. It means that they're both at a safe distance apart not to be able to throw frying pans at each other.

Laughing and laughing and laughing! Thanks Sam.

lmso_1987: what is the general thought on long distance relationships..................
can they work?

Just my experience.

I dated a woman for over a year and she was almost an hour away. In Canada, we have extreme tempuratures and weather, which range from 35 degrees celcius in the summer to more than minus 35 degress in the winter. When you combine work schedules with snowstorms in the winter, it can be a problem.

Further, you can't just pop over to someone's house and spend the night without making up for your work schedule. In the beginning, you can overcome the problems, but over time, it can be wearing.

having one now and its really difficult. Phones, email, webcam cannot make up for the closeness of a day by day relationship, no matter how hard you try! For those that made it - what advice do they have??

BlueSkyJ: A flight from Los Angeles to Rio is $700 and that doesn't include
a hotel car rental food or other expenses....A LDR can get
very expensive very fast....

and you have to be willing to spend many nights alone until you
do see each other.......many nights alone....

Hey B,

I think I may have misjudged you and sorry for any offense.

I think they may be able to work. But you both have to really want it & work at it.

I've tried it & found that it really isn't for me. Found someone closer to home.

Simply put, yes, they can, just depends on the desire, determination & patience that the two are willing to put into it for it to work.

passion8: Yes, long distance relationships can work. There was more than 200 miles between myself and my late husband, when we first met. Luckily we were both in jobs which allowed us several days together regularly. The distance was never a problem, even though he didn't drive. In fact the distance helped us to really get to know each other and not push the relationship forward too quickly. We made the most of every moment we could spend together. After a year, we decided that it was time to make things permanent and bought a house together.

Unfortunately he passed away almost 5 years ago. But I have had 2 other long distance relationships since, which had much more distance........... One in Copenhagen and another in Alaska.

The distance was not a problem in either case and we split for other reasons.

If two people want to be together, they will find a way. We only have one life and should make every moment count, as we never know what is just around the corner.

I believe that there is one special person in this world for each and every one of us. We travel through life in the hope that one day we will find them. We meet other people along the way and live our lives the best we can. Some of us are lucky to find our soulmate. Others, should never give up hope.........

passion, good for you.
sorry to hear he passed away. i think i know what it means.
though, it is not fair that some ppl cannot find the soulmate
