Obama is still being called a socialist, which is a bad word in the USA. I don't get it. Is a trade union not socialistic ? Is the average American family not socialist.....they all contribute to the common good of the family unit and extended relatives, (Socialism). Capitalism has been the corner stone of the USA since the end of the last depression and now the price must be paid. People's life savings, jobs, homes etc., have been wiped out by the hands of a few greedy people....people inspired to do so by the American dream.
When you feed your children dinner, do you bill them for it ? No. Then that is socialism, and what is to be expected within the family. Just expand that practice to the family of human-kind and then we may be able to honestly say that we practice what we preach.
I am a proud Canadian, who has had to have a couple of operations and one more procedure to undergo. The cost from my wallet....$000.00. I have done a comparison and it would have cost me or some medical plan in the US., about $60,000. So yes, we are a socialistic country, yet we vote, drive cars, have one of the lowest murder rates in this hemisphere and enjoy more freedom than the USA could ever dream of. Let me give you one example; I've owed back taxes to the federal government for the past five years....now and then I get a letter to remind me that I owe them, that's it. I'll pay them when I feel like it. Try that in the US.
Obama understands the concept of looking out for the people of his country....if that's a bad thing, socialism, as the republicans accuse him of, then go back to your open market where 8% of the population enjoys 92% of the wealth.
The USA is living proof that capitalism has to be tempered.
One more thing; Canadians own very few guns. If guns make people safe, then the USA should be the safest country on earth. (Not so) Per capita, there are 8 gun murders in the US, for every one in Canada.
The USA and Canada are cousins, I have American 1rst cousins. Obama has a Canadian brother-in-law.
It is time for change, North America which includes Mexico need each other, more than ever before.

the reason obama is being called a socialist, i don't know...because america has been a socialist country for a long time...most people don't realise it because they have the same misconception
the republicans know full well what the word means...they don't want to use the word that is the stepping stone from socialism to describe it, because they want to keep the public blind to the fact they want it to go in the same direction as the rest of the politicians...it's all a big show....a puppet show for the masses.....and just remember..."the masses are asses"

Hmmm...if it weren't so darned cold, I might consider moving to Canada after all.
You do make very good points, Paws. Yes, I hope we can save this planet from ourselves...all of us. It's time to realize that we're one people sharing this tiny planet, and to act together to save it.

I read your whole post, so therefore, I must have a reasoned opinion.
And I realize you don't get it. And I wish I had the time to try to explain the value and benefit of capitalism to you, but you probably have had it explained to you before and didn't get it. So I won't waste the time and effort.
I would just say however that your're correct that unions are a socialist institution, and they played a large role in the bankruptcy of GM and Chrysler. Unions, in conjunction with management operating without courage to confront the unions and management operating with a short term outlook.
I have been a member of a couple big unions in my life, and I didn't like what I saw. They are very corrupting, and they create a lot of unnecessary antagonism between management and the workers. They hold back high performing individuals, and they cover up lazy and incompetent workers.
I would hate to see any marriage between socailist Canada and US. The US will recover, and Canada won't. The world has needed a dynamo economy like the US to fuel it. If we went socialist, what country would the world depend on? Canada? Uk? France? Germany? Nope.
Socialism. A system in which people as a whole, and not individuals, control and own all property. I hope the American people never buy into this crap. If we are going down that path then we will have lost what we have fought to protect OUR WAY of life. If we do say good bye to,.. Liberty and Freedom... God Bless our Troops and the Soldiers who died for our country this Memorial Day
In response to: ... North America which includes Mexico (and Canada) need each other, more than ever before. One world, one predominant species. Can we take a step back and save this planet from ourselves ?
Let's be honest here. It's not a step back you're talking about it's a leap off of a cliff.
What makes you think unification will be an improvement.
"Sharing the wealth" is the same thing as "sharing the poverty".
Creating a larger democracy is the same thing as diluting the existing democracy.
When Europe unified its currencies into the Euro, (on claims that it would increase monetary stability) prices skyrocketed, everywhere. People lost a quarter of their wealth in the first couple of months, and they've been losing more ever since.
Furthermore, now they are preparing to set up a European presidency, and guess what, common people won't even get to vote. It will all be decided at the European parliamentary level.
In fact even the elected parliament members don't get to vote for president. It's already been decided (by God only knows who) that Tony Blair will be given the job first.
Unification and centralization of power are not improvements, they are a return to priviledge for an elite minority and impoverishment for everybody else.
If I were Canadian, the last thing in the world that I would want would be unification with the US and Mexico.

PAYING your back taxes may help your fellow Socialist what if everyone did this you'd be stealing from me and others. Remember That.
I'm no fan of the Zeitgeist crew, they are tied to a sort of New Age cult. I wouldn't trust their advice on anything. Nonetheless when it comes to describing the problems and crimes of the present system, much of what they publish is true.
Their report on the North American Union is really good.
But lets not lose track of who is really pushing the NAU. Its not elected puppets. It's globalist bankers and their various front organizations such as the Council On Foreign Relations.
The more I read this, the more SOCIALIST mentality, I see So I will post this and move on. You want the goverment to take care of you. Sorry about your health problem but you stated it cost you nothing but the money came from somewhere....The people that are working DID pay their TAXES...NO the American family are not socialist..they work for them self and can own their own property and business. When thing are going good and the USA is helping others around the world they have no complaints about Captialist. You state That you are a proud Canadian, then you say they get their money (taxes) when you feel like it. That is a contradiction. I won't even go into the owner ship of fire arms...Check the Toronto news for last nights srories... I think AMERICA the USA is the greatest place to live and make a living. The USA has a great system, millions of immigrants from Socialist,Communist countrys flead to AMERICA because of OUR WAY OF LIFE could give them what their countrys took from them. The right to own property and indivual freedoms... YOUR last statements say it all. One World,One predominant species.... Take a step back.

That's a false comparison Paws. We take care of our families because we love them and we want to provide them with the best we can give so they will grow to be happy and hopefully productive people and earn their own way through life. That's not socialism

no, sorry dogman,...socialism is when corparations make rules and laws...the next step is comunism....when the public falls asleep or are kept ignorant to it, the next step is easy for a government to achieve...."sharing the wealth" is'nt socialism, it's comunism...

Good post.
the only thing this planet needs to be "saved" from, is itself...one bealch from one valcano, causes more damage to the ozone than a week of exhaust from mexico city....and there is plenty of room for ALL the people that are on this rock!!!
I know what you are saying. Webster; Socialism/ any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of produciton and distribution of goods. A system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state. A system of society or group living in which there is NO private property. A stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done...Them's the Facts....
