I was watching TV last night, and all of the sudden it hit me, that in several channels the shows were competitions, reality shows. Mostly Americans.
I mean, I've seen shows of people competing to be the best hair dresser, the best Apprentice, the Amazing Race, Survivor, the best run-way model, the best designer, the all talented... You name it, there is a reality show for it, with thousands of dollars at stake and people being mean to each other in order to win .
The last straw: The best Dog Groomer. In Animal Planet. Competing to win 50,000 and a mobile grooming van, equipped...
I wonder, is this like a genetic trend? Is this a generation that cannot subsist without always competing? Trying to prove who's best?
With so many situations going on right now, is this really the way we want to distract ourselves from real life?
Nothing wrong with a little competitiveness, but...everything?

Just asking...
I bet my dog groomer could beat your hairdresser in a race across the Mojave Desert!
Fallingman: I bet my dog groomer could beat your hairdresser in a race across the Mojave Desert!
Seriously!
I don't have a hair dresser any more! She's somewhere in L. A. competing to win a Stainless Steel diamond grip blow dryer and tourmaline crimping irons...
The trend is so called "reality" and competition series,,, Why? Simply stated, it's because one network made a killing on a reality or competition show and all the others will jump on the bandwagon to ride the poor horse to its death and basically kill off interest,,, It will pass in a few years.

I don't have a dog...so sadly the race is off....how's about we play rock paper scissors instead?
ImInMishawaka: What I think is even more pitiful is that most of these shows have origins from outside the U.S. and they just copy them...
Yes! American Idol, America's got talent, I think those 2 shows are originary from England? Right?
I don't think the US shows are copies, they are actually called "franchises"...
And now there is a Latin American Idol, as well. In fact, last's season Latin American Idol (2008) was Margarita Henriquez, a 18 y/o girl from Panama, where I am from. Both runner ups were extremely talented, Margarita even ore talented than the other.
The decision was made by telephone calls and text messages, it has not been released how many votes did Margarita get... but I bet you money that if this year we (Panama) have a runner up, we'll win again if it is based on calls. Panama had 5 contestants in the semifinals and 3 of them made it to the top five. So I guess Panama's got talent!
What I mean to say here is, not only talent and stamina is involved in winning these things, but also a cart load of money from sponsors, friends and families?

Yes, this is true! Let's not forget the Chef Ramsay shows. Thank God I rarely have time for T.V.

Yes... people watch them religiously, then sponsers and television networks make big deals... then they rake in the money. I like a few, like American Idol, Survivor, and a few other realities like Deadliest Catch and Police Chase shows. As long as people keep watching, big names will keep sponsering, and television will keep entertaining.

Is there an end to this? I mean, is EVERYTHING a competition?
What makes me curious is the apparent insatiability of people for competing, at anything...
What I would like to know is why? This is a phenomenon that I see mostly in the U. S. Don't get me wrong is just that it makes me curious, to see so many people competing in so, so many diverse sports, games and even their lives turn into a game.
Is there like genetic predisposition to prove thier superiority?

Dknew: I think we need to have a real reality show, How about getting a bunch of rednecks and dropping em in the middle of Harlem and see who gets out 1st.
Disclaimer: This is not meant to offend anyone but purly as a joke.
haha
good idea D.
Look I even have the music from the film Deliverance
Most of us are competitive. Most of us like watching others compete. We think 'fame and fortune' is the grand prize. We like seeing other people fall on their faces, or as a consolation, dare to dream. The producers of these so-called 'reality' shows understand this need in us to dream and feel superior.
By giving an audience the power of life over death so to speak, by choosing who lives or who dies, it becomes a kind of socially acceptable verbal and psychological mercy/mauling in front of not just a coliseum mob, but the entire nation.
The illusion of the attainment of 'fame and fortune' is just that, a carefully orchestrated one, by the only profiteers in the whole scam, the producers. Some people know this. Most don't. Fewer care less. It's a winning formula. A fantastic one at that, where actors do not have to be paid, where real 'talent' will never be seen, and mediocrity is consumed like McDonald's cheese burgers. We get this because we want it. We created it, ate it, got fat, spat it out and will continue to get what the producers know we'll consume. Simon Cowell's sides must be sore with laughter.
