The only proper purpose of a government is to protect man’s rights, which means: to protect him from physical violence. A proper government is only a policeman, acting as an agent of man’s self-defense, and, as such, may resort to force only against those who start the use of force. The only proper functions of a government are: the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect your property and contracts from breach or fraud by others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law. But a government that initiates the employment of force against men who had forced no one, the employment of armed compulsion against disarmed victims, is a nightmare infernal machine designed to annihilate morality: such a government reverses its only moral purpose and switches from the role of protector to the role of man’s deadliest enemy, from the role of policeman to the role of a criminal vested with the right to the wielding of violence against victims deprived of the right of self-defense. Such a government substitutes for morality the following rule of social conduct: you may do whatever you please to your neighbor, provided your gang is bigger than his.
I see much better things coming out of community rather than government. Government has never asked how they can help, yet community is always there when we need to brand or raise a barn. Government does nothing but take and community gives where possible.

What about Los Angeles, Detroit or Miami?
Do you see better things coming out of some enclaves of those cities?
If the future starts now, they have make it or lose it all. Their communities are the way they are because they didn't need to work together, but they will soon enough.
The_Kansan: With all due respect, SF, you might wanna' do a little more studying on native cultures. It wasn't quite the utopia that folks are so fond of painting. With very few exceptions, it was a war-based society and anyone who couldn't (or wouldn't) fight didn't last very long.
The white man didn't do anything that "natives" hadn't been doing to each other since time out of mind, it's just that the white man had the technology and strength of numbers to make it permanent. Not saying it's a good thing, just please don't tell me that roses wouldn't have thorns if it weren't for the selfish, mean ol' conquerers from somewhere else.
Very well stated. Come to Wyoming and we will make you our Chief.
I've spent a lot of time in Wyoming. Backpacked in the Wind Rivers - lived with Shoshone for a while - rodeo'd in Cheyenne, Evanston and Chugwater. Always thought it was my favorite state, next to Kansas. Then I met a pretty little gal here on CS a couple of years ago, moved to East Tennessee and married her and I love it here.
I'm still a Westerner at heart, though, and I sure enough miss the 'far-seeing lands' of the American West. ...I'll get back there some day... Bet yer boots!

JasperCrush: I understand that not all people play the system. Many do try to get out of or stay away from the system. Unfortunately those are the ones that have something to loose.
I got talking to one woman who had been raised in Harlem. She'd gotten pregnant at 17 and was in "the system" for many years. It was kind of a trap because any job she could get paid so low that she could not afford the child care let alone losing her health care and rent subsidy.
When her daughter started school she was able to go to college part time and start to get out of the "trap".

One of the guys that works with me is from Detroit. This was his way of getting out of the system. He has worked this ranch for some 14 years. It's amazing to see how far a city boy can come when he puts his mind to it.

It's all in how people apply themselves.
The kids I work with keep getting the message they are stupid and can't learn so it is hard even getting them to start trying.
My job is to find how to help each one get the first step in learning to get past their disability and continue from there.
The man from Detroit apparently saw he had to make a major change and work at it to improve himself. If anyone was telling him he could not or should not even try he apparently did not listen to them.
CONRAD While I remain 98percent sympathetic to Ayn Rand's disposition, we need to remember that she was stark raving mad. My "rights"are not derived from any political party or other criminal cartel. when it gets to be a matter of unbearable oppression I will meet like-minded folk on the bridge at moonrise and we will make Pikes

Within our community, there is no one that can't succeed as long as they apply themselves. We will help them, but we will not do for them. Many that try do quit. This life isn't easy, nor do we gloss it over to make it seem so. They have to want to succeed.
