This is quite an interesting question on the banning of the burqa. While I would agree with Ronan that those of other cultures should respect the culture of their country of residence, I think it would be difficult to be entirely fair on the matter. After all, when westerners go to Muslim countries they are required to wear more discreet clothing usually. I am not sure if it is fair to ask their women to wear less clothing while they live in the west.

However, having thought about this for a little while, I have to say that I do believe that the wearing of the burqa is an act of repression of women. If it were not, then women would have found a way of making the traditional burqa more comfortable to wear without giving up the anonymity and freedom from exposure that is claimed to be their reason for wearing it. I have read several representations of how uncomfortable, hot, sweaty and inconvenient wearing the traditional black or dark blue burqas is. I cannot believe that no muslim woman has considered making a perfectly comfortable and sedate burqa from cool cotton or linen during the warm weather, and in a selection of nice colours. It could not be a crime against religion for a woman to alter her burqa to make it easier for her to see in order to drive or even walk safely. I would agree with the banning of burqas if they are used to repress women. When I see a burqa made of red polka dot silk, with a hint of sequins, then I might just change my mind, and get one myself.

I dunno, I do think that for some it's apart of their culture and they want to be clad head to toe in block fabric but for many it's just another form of oppression.
I reckon it should be about choice.

well theres practical reasons why they shouldnt be let wear them outside their own countries,i.e.u cant walk into a bank here with a motor cycle helmet or balaclava on,who,s to know who,s under a burka

Surely people should be free to practice their religious beliefs no matter which Country they are in. I do agree that when you are in a Country you abide by its laws but if a persons religious beliefs are not harming anybody why should they be outlawed.

I do feel that the wearing of the Burka should be a choice.

I do get your point regarding not being allowed go into banks or some other buildings with your head covered and dont know the amswer to that one, my point is that if some woman want to wear the Burka then I feel they should be allowed to.

my point is... should they be able walk in to a bank with nearly there whole face covered, when the law in this country plainly states that u cant, im not disagreeing with u about choice, but u cant change the laws to suit a minority religion. i really dont care what anybody wears, we should all be free to choose but unfortunately we ars not

Honest Question here...do you think a muslim country would change its laws to suit any other religion especially Judaism and Christian?

Not in a million years!

Burkas were part of the customary male garb of various peoples inhabiting the Caucasus region (long contested between Russia, Iran, and Turkey, as well as prone to inter-ethnic conflict).

Burkas were adopted by Russian cavalry, and worn as part of the Russian military uniform from the middle of the 18th century until the 1850s, during the Caucasus War. Vasily Chapayev wore a burka as a part of his military uniform.

Many Muslims believe that the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, and the collected traditions of the life of Muhammed, or hadith, require both men and women to dress and behave modestly in public. However, this requirement, called hijab, has been interpreted in many different ways by Islamic scholars (ulema) and Muslim communities (see Women and Islam); the burqa is not specifically mentioned in the Quran.

By the same token, perhaps it would have got more attention from men of it was....

Just wanted to post the fact that originally it was actually a traditonal male garb in some Countries. And that there is a history behind it that we dont know.

I dont have an issue with what they were, its there religion/life...but for non muslim countries to change their constitution/laws is just ridiculous. A muslim country would never accommodate for another religion ever!
