h4rdtr4nc3: I dont have an issue with what they were, its there religion/life...but for non muslim countries to change their constitution/laws is just ridiculous. A muslim country would never accommodate for another religion ever!

So you agree that the French shouldnt change their law to ban them?

True and hopefully freedom to follow your religious beliefs is what they see as being just that.

Well, I don't know more about it but It is surely a cultural thing nothing to do with religion but if somebody really like to wear burka or like to wear short dresses, it should not be a big issue for Govt of so-called democratic country.
Freedom of expression and speech is our birth right, I'm practical Muslim but I don't see anything wrong if a woman does not wear burka but if she wants to wear it, i don't see anything wrong in it aswell. Burka is not bigger problem than unemployment and financial conditions through out the world, Mr.President should work to sort these issues instead of engaging in useless matters.

I'm not sure if Carla Bruni is keeping him happy or not, it is quiet possible, he just want to see woman behind burka.laugh

True...but why does this hole world have to revolve around muslims!? I have nothing against any other religion. But come on other religions can modify and change things to suit certain circumstanes but no not muslims.

Ah come on, what if he banned them? Muslims wont stay quiet..they are notorious for their ratic behaviour. Muslims are probably ready to exploed pending this law change! If he doesnt ban them muslims would see this as a victory. And fuel there stance as being the one and only and most important religion on this planet!

All religions are great and equally respected, world looks gorgious because it has many colors, many languages and many cultures.

If tomorrow Mr.Cowen will take a stand and ban gambling/night clubs by saying that it is against Catholic rules and it should not be allowed in Catholic country, I'm sure majority of people will be on road next day in against of it as it is against the culture/traditions, so if Muslim will do the same, there is nothing wrong in it.

FYI, still in country like Ireland, some schools don't allow admission if somebody does not baptized according to Catholic rules, it is surely breach of equality.

I think your views on Islam may be coloured by particular media outlets. Some broad generalisations in there!

Oh this made me laugh..not at you eternal.

I would love my sister to read this. If she thought that Cowan would ban anything that wasn't Roman Catholic she would start voting for him. In fact she'd probably get her marriage annulled and marry him!

Hi Nitak. I have to say, I completely frown on them Burka things- It just seems very dodgey that a culture regards the women as lower class citizens and that they should not be seen. Ever notice how women wearing them tend to walk slower (and not cos thier movements restricted by the material?) I think they were really invented to cover up something else JMO- I mean no offence.dunno

LadyBlackAdder: This is quite an interesting question on the banning of the burqa. While I would agree with Ronan that those of other cultures should respect the culture of their country of residence, I think it would be difficult to be entirely fair on the matter. After all, when westerners go to Muslim countries they are required to wear more discreet clothing usually. I am not sure if it is fair to ask their women to wear less clothing while they live in the west.

However, having thought about this for a little while, I have to say that I do believe that the wearing of the burqa is an act of repression of women. If it were not, then women would have found a way of making the traditional burqa more comfortable to wear without giving up the anonymity and freedom from exposure that is claimed to be their reason for wearing it. I have read several representations of how uncomfortable, hot, sweaty and inconvenient wearing the traditional black or dark blue burqas is. I cannot believe that no muslim woman has considered making a perfectly comfortable and sedate burqa from cool cotton or linen during the warm weather, and in a selection of nice colours. It could not be a crime against religion for a woman to alter her burqa to make it easier for her to see in order to drive or even walk safely. I would agree with the banning of burqas if they are used to repress women. When I see a burqa made of red polka dot silk, with a hint of sequins, then I might just change my mind, and get one myself.

JMO

While I can see some merit in what ya say Ladyblackadder I still feel that it would not work in a work scenario. Imagine a teacher teaching students wearing a burqa or for example a job were you deal with public and you are wearing a burqa.

They probably reckon they're safe enough from terrorism. What could be worse than being Belgian after all?moping
