hmmm...living in arkansas, there is quite the stereo-type about how we should 'sound'...the arkansan is seen as having quite the hick accent...

anyhow, i have been very careful to raise my kids without this. i do not speak with an accent, and i enunciate my words very carefully...as i was raised to do. my family is originally from chicago, and it was very important to my mother to have children that possessed proper grammar and also SOUNDED educated.

much to my surprise when my three-year-old started sounding like sandy off of spongebob.

"i want they-at" for "i want that"
"yay-us" for "yes"
"ray-ud" for "red"

each time, i correct her pronunciation...and she repeats it in her new horrid twang. with a giggle, i might add.

there IS a question here...promise. should i mention it to the school? should i keep my mouth shut? should i hope she just soaks in the lack of accent that my other children have?

it GRATES on my nerves...i can't STAND it. or should that be...i cay-unt stay-und e-ut.

Sounds like the old"i've found something that gets me Mom's attention" trick.I would continue to correct her and after awhile she'll give it up.

she's three and almost three months. but she has a 45% cognitive delay...so she's not even at the level of a two-year-old as of yet. i'm REALLY hoping she's just pulling my chain...but i'm afraid she's actually learning these patterns from her therapists.

and i'm really thinking i need to speak with her teachers about it. of course, i would hate for that to have negative repercussions on raegan.

I've lived in California and New Jersey, in the country, city, big and little towns, I've lived in the valley and in the mountians, I have more mixes of accents than I evencare to think about, sure, some of them drive my mom crazy, but she would rather have me talking with my crazy mixed up accents and tease me about them sometimes than not have me be able to talk at all. I say yall and instead of no I say noa and I add r's where there shouldn't be any at the ends of words, but just live with it and remind yourself every time you get irked that at least she can say something at all...on the other hand, doing it just to irritate you, well, ignore her, sure you can correct her sometimes, but if you always keep at it and get irked by it it'll just spur her on to do it more.

my corrections are subtle. mostly...if she says, "i cay-unt" i say "what do you mean you CAN'T?"

but i get the speaking thing...cause she didn't say her first words til she was 23 months old, and they were beginning to teach her sign language.

Yep, the old piss mommy off trick. Correct her once, lead by example and above all don't let her know it bugs you.

I have a slight to moderate southern accent, but nothing close to the heavy drawl and contant incorrect grammer. My parents were raised away form here, so I guess I still talk like they do. People tell me all the time, you're not from around here are you?

So star, there is hope! Even when my kids fall into one of thier crowds and say "aint" they are as aware of that, as they would be by cussing in front of me.

You know a lot of people like to hear usns hillbillies talk.

;)

i know, i know...it's actually scary.

you will never hear 'ain't' outta my kids' mouths...thank goodness...but i dread teen years with the middle two. something tells me they'll do it just for spite :)

it's just strange...because none of my family talks that way, and the ONLY place she could have gotten it is at school. so i went to speak with her teachers...and none of them talk that way. so...i'm thinking she must have a new therapist or something...

either that, or she's emulating spongebob. an even BETTER reason to bar that show.

And I for one am proud of my accent and where Im from.My daughters are all straight A students. My 13 year old stands out the most, with the testing she ranked tenth grade for a 13 yr old.In math and writing she blew them off the map.She took state in choir solo. And I tell her and have always told her that people can be so ignorant. When her cousins come in from Indiana, and Ohio and every summer there is a fight. And its about the difference in accents. But I tell her over yonder, reckon so you,all and several more.Witheach residence comes a history, and its one my kids can be proud of.yay yay

top choice school.. would be MIT - all of the $ in the world can't buy your way in, your child has to be in the top 1% of the 2% they pick from to make the cut. Just thought I'd share that, and on that note.. I'm really going to pass out now.

tongue whatever school it is there will be no buying in.She will achieve this on her own with her academic ability. And I have changed the trust fund from eighteen to twenty-one.I remember that age still crazy wantingdifferent directions at the same time. And if I feel at this age, shes not mature enough till she is.Growing up in the Appalachians has showed me alot of things one being that people here are proud and work hard for all they got.tongue

As a Brit, you will have to forgive my ignorance ...

What stigma is attached to your daughter having that accent?
