Children do not know how their parents love them, and they never will till the grave closes over those parents, or till they have children of their own.
--Edmund Vance Cooks

As adults, we may feel we were cheated out of a "normal" childhood because of our parents' emotional, physical, or spiritual failings. We may think they should never be forgiven for their actions or inactions when we were young.

Yet imagine what our lives would be like today if we did not forgive. We would be bitter, stomping angrily through life with a clipboard in hand, ready to write down the name of the next person who crosses us. It's time to throw away the clipboard and the names on it - including the names of our parents.

We do not have to like our parents, but we can love them. By the same token, we need to realize our parents love us in their special way. They aren't perfect - and neither are we.

Help me remember my parents did the best they could with what they had. That's all anyone can really do.

I will not go into detail here but my Mother sacrificed a great deal to keep me and my Dad, not my birth father, but the only Dad I had raised me as his own daughter. In fact I did not know he was not my Dad until I was 15 and one of my Aunties got upset with my Mom so she blurted it out.dunno The main thing is I was loved by my parents even though I did not always think so. hug

Gosh it's so true isn't it?

"We do not have to like our parents, but we can love them." I sometimes feel like that, that's I'm just doing my duty as a child. And as long as i respect them and show them love for whatever reason, I've done my part.

I've had my heartbreaks and dissapointments towards my parents, as they are to me, I would assume. And I guess I would come to terms when I have child(ren) of my own someday, hope it happens before " the grave closes over".

You're right on. All we can ever do is our best. Now, I know some parents that should be shot for the way they've treated their children, but those children aren't going to do anything possitive for themselves or "get back at" their parents if the hold it against them for the rest of their lives. The only thing that will make a difference regarding the hurt they feel is to forgive their parents and move on. I've seen miracles happen where the forgiveness bug has bitten.
