I've read a story about a young pre-school girl who reached 400 pounds. This child was consuming ~10,000 calories a day, she couldn't walk, was getting around by rolling.
In a case of such a young child it is of course up to a parent(s) how to deal with it, but still... she always was hungry and crying for more food.
Many adults go through this struggles and battles for years.
What do you think of it?
Is it influenced by emotional and cultural factors?

It must be an illness in some cases because at such young age a person can't possibly have deep emotional issues or a strong cultural influence yet.
And I think the illness comes from some kind of imbalance in a brain, hence I wonder why there is no medical help for such people.
I saw a tv programme about a genetic disorder. A missing gene left people permanently hungry (plus problems with bones unrelated to hunger, I think). This poor little girl stole the cat or dog food she was so hungry!
There are those who have medical conditions but biggest thing these days is lack of exercise, though people are becoming more aware of the contents of food & how things like E numbers can have an affect.
Sad story in Dundee, UK, where a whole family has been seperated by the social work dept. They have went too far in my opinion as support should have continued:

I watch a documentary on something like this and I couldn't believe it. The parents had to put a lock on the refrigerator to keep the kids from eating in the middle of the night or other odd hours. I remember in one scene I saw a large kid, don't recall his age, behind bars to get him to stop eating!!
I think we all have this problem to some extent or another. I am not an obese person, but sometimes I just want to eat..eat..and eat. Especially when I go on a diet, I can't figure it out, as soon as I say I am on a diet..I start eating everything in site. I do think for some of us it's an emotional thing that can trigger it..like a divorce...or not getting any!
I no longer use that word(diet)..and I have lost some weight...just belly fat.
RDM59: What a strange name, if I thought that by eating more I would end up with a more fashionable and larger willy I would try it.....
yes it is, I supported a guy who had this disorder and one of they effects is that the opposite is true and regardless of food intake and exercise for him to loose weight was almost impossible he was permanently hungry.

An illness sorry??? You should blame the parents to overfeed their child, that is irresponsible!!

The child should be removed from the parents, and placed temporarily with a family that treats food for its principal purpose...nutrition.
Then the child's parents undergo deucation on healthy cooking and nutrition, however long that takes.
