morgan5: I'm not saying in all cases just that it exsists, people who suffer with this are generally of short statue, but apart from that and their weight they look completely 'normal' and the behavioural problems do not manifest unless it s to do with food.

I worked in LD for years and supported people with the disorder, so know it does exist.

Of-course. As I said, 'often', not always.

Really tough when it's the real deal.sigh

venere08: The child should be removed from the parents, and placed temporarily with a family that treats food for its principal purpose...nutrition.

Then the child's parents undergo deucation on healthy cooking and nutrition, however long that takes.

It's a crime to have that happen to a child.

thumbs up

It was really sad, he was under a Consultant so was getting Medical support and his food intake was stuck to rigidly along with exercise. This guy would lie, steal whatever it took to get food. bouquet

Here ya go Morgan;

from wiki;

Prader-Willi syndrome is also frequently associated with an extreme and insatiable appetite, often resulting in morbid obesity. There is currently no consensus as to the cause for this particular symptom, although genetic abnormalities in chromosome 15 disrupt the normal functioning of the hypothalamus. Given that the hypothalamus regulates many basic processes, including appetite, there may well be a link. However, no organic defect of the hypothalamus has been discovered on post mortem investigation.

Nettermann: An illness sorry??? You should blame the parents to overfeed their child, that is irresponsible!!

In many cases with children, in a nutshell - yes... But NOT necessarily just overfeeding. Many parents are not aware that the same portion of similar food can be anywhere in a range between 150 and 1000 cal. In US to eat right and healthy, you have to be very comfartable financially. Otherwise - you'll eat what's available: chip and crappy. Of course it won't make one obese... just overweight and unhealthy.

Nettermann: seems that lot of people in the States are affected by this disease

You keep saying that, but it's so untrue.
If you ever are in NYC, come to midtown Manhattan at lunch hours and look around. You'll barely see a-few-extra-pounds people, definitely less that 5%.

Yes, Lovely, it is. sad flower hug

But I would imagine the other end of this disorder is even harsher because people make fun of obesity without realizing that it can be an illness.

This girl I am talking about in my OP -

videos and photos of her at her highest are posted on "fun and jokes" web sites... thumbs down

it's horrible, I hate seeing how people can be so cruel. They don't even care about a persons feelings. It makes me really sad.

I remember my kids going over to their Aunt's house, and they came back with tales of a meal that went like this... Chuckie said she served "slabs" of lasagne, with heaping servings of corn. And for dessert they went to McDonald's Now all of my kids said they were getting sick to their stomachs watching their cousins eat.

Her children are really obese adults now. And I remember buying extra food when I kept them for a weekend or so. I have never seen "children" eat like that until I sat them at my table. I was floored.

I know I suffer with diabetes. I remember around the time when I got diagnosed. I would wake up from a sound sleep hungry. Nauseated because my stomach felt empty. It was not empty because I had a regular dinner not too long ago. I was always hungry. I tried everything, nothing could stop my appetite. Now I did not always eat, but I was always hungry. Now it is so much better.

I know what that feels like being hungry, and not knowing why.

Yes, sweet girl, it is sad. But not all people are like that. And those who are - they are just trying to make themselves to feel better about their own shortcomings...

I could be all wrong, But to me it becomes an Obsession, and a Mind thing, as such is Alcoholism is called a Diesease....

Tho it is mote an addiction, such as I QUIT 6 yrs ago... It is to over power ones own Mind, and same a Addicvtion, of Tobacco...., one of the strongest habits and addictions to break, so they give it a Fancy name, just as alcololism is a Diease, Ha, yes, an it can be Hereditary, passed thru the blood of an infant.... Many are born, addicted to CoCaine.....

so I quit smoking 6 months ago, I still have that desire to Smoke........ I DONT..... I have refrained, and i have refrained from Alcohol

It takes self esteem , Desire, and want too....

and yess it is hard, and takes self motivation, and alot of it to win,

I think their Mentally Addicted........

And mind over matter, can win, if so desired, but many use the excuse, I CANT

I have to work at it , and set my mind to win, or overcome..... so can they, but i do feel they must want too, not just want others to feel they have no options..... They have options, just as i had options, I did it..... so they must too

Larry, I agree that it can be a mind thing, emotional problems thing, or an addiction learnt in a family from the very first days of one's life.

But keep in mind that one does NOT need alcohol or sigs to SURVIVE, food is different - a person who is addicted cannot go cold turkey with food.

I also believe there are cases of illness that prevents people from helping themselves. For such people no amount of self-motivation or will power makes a big difference.

Yash124g: There are those who have medical conditions but biggest thing these days is lack of exercise, though people are becoming more aware of the contents of food & how things like E numbers can have an affect.

Sad story in Dundee, UK, where a whole family has been seperated by the social work dept. They have went too far in my opinion as support should have continued:

Oh wow... I looked at this link.

It is so very wrong, IMO!
This family had been victimised. Wouldn't helping parents be the a logical, fair and much-cheaper-for-taxpayers thing to do?

So-so sad...

I've read somewhere about a young family of three. The parents and their 2 year-old were grossly obese.
When the child was 2yo, both parents had stomach stapling or gastric banding surgery.

In a following half a year, the child's weight normalized. Just like that.

This is the case of a healthy child influenced by his parents' way of life.
