venere08: Hi Konig I love your idea of a nursery with rare and exclusive plants. Have you started growing any just to experiment? Three acres is a good size...manageable for what you wnat to do. In any case, there is all the other land with your friend, in case you need extra down the track. There is a growing market with a section of people, like you, sick of the same old plants, as pretty as they might be.

With my land, it has lots of good winter rains in that region, so, instead of having it go to waste, I either sell it, or make use of it. I was thinking of growing some rare Australian native fruit trees.

When do you think you will start your nursery?

I have been traveling quite a bit( and still there is plenty of places I would like to visit to collect plants)

I bring plants from every country I have been. Like Island, Sweden, Nederland and so on as you see all of them are North Countries in Zones 2 to 6. That's what will survive here in Nova Scotia. Because when we buying Plants Hardiness Zone needs to be considered the top of priorities. Survival throught the Winter monthes.

I already have 200 plants of different genera and species from Grasses, perenial to a Woody Plants. That's what I've collected for now. And i propagated a lot as well.

I don't know when i'll start, First I want to plant MY Garden. I can do it finally ( my boyfriend and myself we recently bought a house)

I want to make different type of Gardens including Water Garden and Moss and Lichen Garden. We will see how things will go it is going to be a hard work to do what I'd like to create.

You know Venere I can talk about Plantae World forever ... you need to shut me up. laugh

If I were you ... i would sell your land and buy a smaler but closer to the city plot. Or to use those money on starting what you will want. Depends on the Value if land in your area I guess.

But i would never keep land without a use.

hopefloats: Wish we had a leash free park in this area......

I don't believe I want to be babysitting animals or little people! My nerves aren't made of steel anymore.

The residents got together and petitioned the local council. It took them a lot of work, but they got it. And the dogs have an absolute ball, as it's a huge grassy area, with some trees, and a few benches, with a tap and water container, as well as doggie bags near the entrance so we're prepared, lol. And it's a great down time for the 'mums and dads', as it gives us time to relax and chat.

Maybe you could do the same your way?bouquet

RDM59: It is a good idea but I think K is right, people would not want to travel that distance. In particular upon their return, to have to drive all that way the next day !! You would need to think about getting transport and provide a pickup service but this would be very costly and timely IMO..... Good luck anyway .....

Oh, I totlaly agree with you. There is no way people would travel that distance on a daily basis. No, to set up a doggy daycare, I wwould need to lease premises near heavily populated areas, where most people went to work, and were affluent enough to afford the service. The going rates are around $US25-35 per day.

If I kept the 20 acres, I would need to move there, and either set up an animal sanctuary, for hurt or orphaned native animals(many young lose their mothers along the way), and/or grow native fruit trees, such as native quondongs and native limes. I have started researching these, and it is so tempting to do that. I really would need to be semi-retired from my current work, to even start such a project.

cheers

That's fantastic K. What a wonderful achievement already!

And please, do feel free to talk as much as you like about plants. I would love to read all about them and your project. It's very inspiring.

I have thought of selling that land and doing jsut as you say, to buy a smaller portion closer to the city. It's either that, or if I find something in Italy, will sell and buy a small place with little parcel of land, if that is not too much pie in the sky. Time will tell.

It is A serious thought ... First you need to find out if your land offers proper Cultural conditions to grow those Species.
Then you need to explore Market. Then you need to calculate how much will you have to invest: to buy seedlings, fertilizers, Pest and Disease sprays and spraying equipment. Equipment for tillining, movind and so on.

You will need someone who knows Plants and growing business to start.

I like an Idea. If there is a Market and you will actually have profit in the end .. GO FOR IT. thumbs up

buy the way you may combine it with having beehives among trees it will help pollination and will bring another side of incom.

Good luck Venere hug

venere08: I would love to do something like this.

I watched a program at my parents' place tonight, of people who had started up a business based on an idea or hobby/passion.

It got me thinking even more, about what I really want to do with the next half of my life.

Wondering what others here dream about doing?

Maybe you can make it a reality.

Doing it for living would be great for those who have passion for animals (and suitable space in a house).
I have a bird and was pet sitting for my friend's bird sometimes. My friend travels often and really needs help with her pets. Somehow the word got spread and some other people started contacting me when they needed to go out of town. As a favor, I do it for two other people now (whenever I am available) but wouldn't change my career to do it for living.

I would've loved to been able to do just the opposite of daycare for other peoples pets.

My dream was to be able to own a lot of land out in the country where I could take in unwanted and unloved pets.Or maybe even open up an orphanage for unwanted and unloved children.

I worked in a doggy daycare once. It's a lot of work, and you have to have a background as an obedience trainer. It's one person controlling a pack of 5-10-20 dogs...and scooping up after them. I loved it, though. (And yes, I'm a certified obedience trainer who had her own business and loved it, but found myself to be a bad businesswoman who gave lessons #2 and #3 away during lesson #1. sigh)

I'm studying to be a Doctor of Naturopathy now, and taking steps to make my future dreams a reality. And they're a reality now in a way as I help others for free with the knowledge I have at my fingertips now because of my studies and the resources I have on hand. It feels good, and tells me that I'm doing the right thing, because this is my passion. I did the same thing, Venere...while I was on family medical leave caring for my late husband, I had to decide what I wanted to do with the second half of my life. This is my answer: to live a healthier life, and to help others to do so as well. wine

Yes, I have contacted CSIRO, a govt organisation heavily involved in scientific research in all things agricultural. They were very helpful, and was put in touch with a couple of nurseries which specialise in rare Australian native plants. It turns out that the ones I mentioned can be grown here, but need to be potted, and there are current restrictions in numbers allowed to be grown, and not many around. The most rare of the native limes was $200 a plant, and only 2 or 3 left 6mths ago. So, it will be a work in progress. There is another plant that will be perfect for my land, as it grows as a ground cover and has fabulous native fruit that looks like tiny berries, and great to make jam or chutney. Restaurants pay big money for these, as well as a fortune for native limes.

Anyway, I am as bad as you. I can go on!

Hi Venere

Hi Laura, you have such a natural talent with animals. You've obviously worked out a nice balance b/w your career and love of animals.
If you come to Australia, you can look after my border collie!laugh

Yes, I know what you mean! I hope you do that one day. Or with children, though I think it would be easier to set up something with animals. Both would be very rewarding, just to see them in a safe, nurturing environment, would be fabulous.

Heavens, you were on your own with the dogs? Yes, a lot of work for sure! I think it would be difficult to sustain, you would need to have others helping you, otherwise, not matter your passion, it would wer thin if you are exhausted. And I do know what you're saying about the business side. In the work I do, I'm getting better at the business side, but years ago, I know I have done work I never billed the person for. But not these days, I can't afford not to. It would be nice to have someone do that side of things. I took on a bookeeper, as there is no way I could do it myself, but she turned out to be so unreliable and left me in the lurch. Found another though.

Looks like you've found your path in Naturopathy. How sane!
Are you far off completing your studies? It is an area that is a passion for me, health and well being, working with herbs, nutrition. In my work, I see a lot of women. It is the health and well being side that I love, though I do good work in other ways with them. Thing is, I am interested in so many things. I have just renewed my real estate licence, as there is new legislation. I don't intend to go into again full on, just handy to have.

That was only a dream.

But since I love to sew I've decided to open up a streamstress shop out of my home.
