scarwolve: if rte had any decenty they would cut his wages by 45 percent at least

He has already taken a large % wage cut as have all of the RTE staff. He was a bit silly talking about cutting welfare though. I dont think people like him who have never struggles in life realise how hard it is on people to live on 200 yo yo's a week. When question on these matters rich people like him always bring up how they struggled during their college days or how they had no money as a kid. But only being able to afford cheap beer as a student doesn't compare to trying to raise a family and pay the bills on welfare. Well off people are better off staying out of that debate i think until they have walked a mile in a poor mans shoes.

That's a fair point. When someone on his kind of money talks about cutting welfare it grates with people a bit. That said I didn't see the programme so I don't know in what context he was speaking. If he was saying it as a personal rant then people are right to be pissed off, however a journalist's role is often to play devil's advocate. So I would have to see what he said first.

I dont think it was a Devils advocate thing. He basically stated that we cant afford to pay current welfare payments and stated that we pay people far more than the UK in welfare. A fair point if you just look at the bare figures but what Pat failed to mention is that necessities like, rent, food, Leccy, Gas, Clothes and basically everything are way cheaper in the UK. Also even though inflation is decreasing the cost of stables that poor families spend most of their money on have stayed basically the same. Luxery items like cars and propety decreasing in cost has brought inflation down. Not many struggling famalies can afford them.

As I say, I didn't see the programme sowill take your word on his intent.

Certainly though the welfare must be cut argument is nonsense. As you say it doesn't take into account that there has been no real change in the cost of living in terms of basic goods.
