Tory's letter to Santa helped her discover what love is really all about.
What I want for Christmas is man Tory signed. "I can't face the holidays alone." So Tory's co-worker Rose suggests she ask Santa for a man for Christmas. So Tory writes a letter requesting a gorgeous, fantasy man,but she immediately feels wistful becasue that type of man would probably never be interested in her.
Then in walks an average guy who wants to buy gifts for the little kids at his school where he used to be a teacher, but because of layoffs is now working as a custodian. In the coruse of the converstaion, he remarks"I keep hoping some nice lady will put me on her wish list, but I don't think anyone would be ineterest in an unemployed teacher."
As he's getting ready to leave he invites Tory and Rose to the school holiday program and leaves.
After the man leaves Tory realizes that the custodian is more inclined with what she really wants for Christmas.
First Tory wants a man for Christmas. After she determines that she wants someone rich, handsome, and strong, we get the conflict:she feels she's undesireable(short,20 lbs overweight, has a sucky job.)Then the hero comes in. He has sparkly brown eyes. He's not married, which is always a fact that you have to establish in these "first meet" stories. He's dedicated to his (ex-) job.Through some clever conversation the man confesses that he's wanting a lady for Christmas. Lastly he leaves the flyer for the school holiday event, which acts as the plot device so that Tory can contact him/see him again.
Tory realizes how shallow and insincere she was when she jotted that letter to Santa, hence the character grows during the course of this story. Each of her worries about her own flaws, the hero has. She's overweight and he's losing his hair. She's insecure about her job,he's a custodian. Even though Tory is sad when she says this."I wonder if some man is writing a list of things he's looking for in a woman. Do you think he'd say he wanted a short,brown-haired woman who's 20 lbs overweight and who works in an 'everything's Dollar Store?"
Tory told Rose that maybe she should've written in her letter to Santa that she wanted a man who was kind, thoughtful and generous and who has a nice smile.
So Tory decideds to attend that school program and tell the man that she put him on her wish list for Christmas. But at the same time Rose said but he's the opposite of everything you asked Santa for in your letter she reminded Tory. He's also on the short side Rose cautioned.Tory smiled and looked at Rose and said he's not that short.
Tory smiled back at Rose as she was walking out the door of the store and said "Know what I guess I do believe in Santa after all."

I read the forums, and I learn from what I read.. I WILL NOT SETTLE!!! I know what I DESERVE!!!
I didn't obviously get the same from that piece of writing as the rest of you. In my book she didn't know what she wanted in the first place, just vaguely wished for someone she knew she would naver have, someone who was "too good " for her.
Then, when she examined her beliefs about herself, she found herself short of anything she would present to a man of her dreams, so she settled for someone who made her feel good, because he had so many faults that hers didn't matter any more.
The way I see it, she came across as desperate enough to settle for anything, rather than examine what she really wanted and go after that.
She settled for Mr Right Now, instead of waiting and working towards Mr Right.

she didn't settle in for anything, it's about being open for other possibilies, giving someone a chance and thus giving herself a chance. You'd never know what you'll experience.. Nothing is written in stone..

just my 2cents xx
I never mentioned settling "in"...... I already got the inference of being open to possibilities. English is my first language!
Your two cents was duly noted the first time too. No need for reiteration.
Big_John: Each of us hopes in some way that the person we are looking for will walk into our life. I hope I will know it is her, when she does.
You have to have a clear picture of what you are looking for before you could recognise it. You can't recognise an apple, (never mind a red as opposed to a green one), if you have never seen or smelled or tasted one.
