So you agree that rehabilitation and education is the key?? with support from counsellors and a mentorship program..?
cheers
Can work with some, I had the dubious pleasure of a 28 day spell in military nick for a small misdemeanour If the bad lads had to do a spell in a military nick they would never go back, sheer toture 24/7 lost nearky 20 lbs and never stopped running fit as a flea when I got out.... took a fair bit of beer to get back to norm

Steve5721: Stops that person from re-offending though!
Tell that to the family of the person who was executed, only then for the system to realise they were not actually the perputrator of the crime. Remember the case of Derek Bentley?

Capital punishment for major offences, public humiliation for minor offences. Our prisons costs us roughly £2000 a week per inmate, whilst old age pensioners freeze to death in the winter months??

Something is drastically wrong when you put it like that.

I agree
I reckon people must be pretty desperate to commit a crime which they know will land them in prisons and away from their loved ones - maybe if some of that money mentioned above was used to make sure that not quite so many people left the education system with no hopes for the future, things may start to improve.
If there were as many people from rich families as there are from poor ones in prisons, what Ive just said wouldnt matter - yes, there are some but I bet they arent there for petty shoplifting.... there is a big undercurrent of unrest in society caused by the massive disparities between rich and poor - its a myth that people dont want to work, they would love to, if there were enough jobs to go round but because profits are being creamed off at the top of the pile, those on the bottom of it are left with little to no hope at all.
Its easier to get hold of class A drugs inside prisons than it is on the outside is what Ive heard and that does go along with the preferences of the warders for subdued inmates being easier to handle.....
Yes, some prisoners should have the keys thrown away and as JB said in an earlier post, they should have to work for privileges but lets not to ignorant to the society that produces a massive underclass in the first place.

All that's true in some cases, but crime is also a badge of pride for many of my generation... so much of todays crime doesn't even bring a material return for the criminal, but is just senseless violence born out of a warped sense of pride and image. Hence why humiliation and other traditional techniques I believe would work well.
I accept the argument about jobs, if they spent ten hours a day shoveling coal, they'd be too knackered for crime.
I wonder how the costs would differ between the two. Even if the National Service cost more at least it would be something to try. No alternatives seem to be on the agenda !
I'd even like to see chain gangs out cleaning up litter in the streets. I'd love our kids of today to see that.

Something needs doing but national service is just another name for conscription......
Theyve just brought new rules in on the benefits thing anyway, a friend of mine who works for the job center has just done the training - and they are really going to be toughening up in the next few months...

It would be a real eye opener for them. Something to look forward to if they end up taking the wrong route in life.

Well that sounds encouraging Trish but I'll bet it is nowhere near enough !
I don't agree on the conscription thing. I would just rather see prisoners being taught the disciplines that society requires. They've obviously never had that. Is it never too late to learn ?
