RDM59: Well that sounds encouraging Trish but I'll bet it is nowhere near enough !
I don't agree on the conscription thing. I would just rather see prisoners being taught the disciplines that society requires. They've obviously never had that. Is it never too late to learn ?
Restorative/reparative justice is pretty interesting and can be applied to a diverse set of wrongdoings

Veritaas: How do you break the cycle of generations sometimes of bad or irrespoinsible parenting, where some parents simply dont care about how their children grow up or what crimes they commit?
Well for one thing I can't break someone else's cycle. I have responsibility over one kid. It starts with the kid/kids you have at home. All that is required if for you to do your best with those under your care. If every parent took that approach of being responsible instead of sometimes letting society raise their kids then maybe there'd be one less prisoner for the prison system.

stefonline: All that testosterone...highly explosive like rocket fuel...
I really don't get what's whould be so attractive as a man about spending endless hours in some cramped up cell, looking through a bunch of bars like some gorilla in a zoo, having to look at a bunch of hairy legged men day after day, having to watch my back all the time, living with the threat of being shanked or worse if I dropped a bar of soap in the shower....and people actually go BACK for repeat sessions of this? Maybe its just me but hell to the no!.
TrueBlue1986: Capital punishment for major offences, public humiliation for minor offences. Our prisons costs us roughly £2000 a week per inmate, whilst old age pensioners freeze to death in the winter months??
RDM59: I wonder how the costs would differ between the two. Even if the National Service cost more at least it would be something to try. No alternatives seem to be on the agenda !
I'd even like to see chain gangs out cleaning up litter in the streets. I'd love our kids of today to see that.
They do that here. I think it's the county jail. I see them pretty frequently on the road shoulders. Last time I noticed was last week, and it was a group of female prisoners. So let's be sure we clarify that not all prisoners are male.
