Personally I'd much prefer a straight out sorry but you're not my type than an endless series of chats or emails that go nowhere. I think sometimes that people do that because they're lonely and just want a friend to occupy their boring existance.
I got a flower once that said "I don't wish further contact with you" or something along those lines. I thought fine, at least you wont waste my time. I wasn't bothered by it at all.
