im insane for even posting here but you sound actually inquisitive so i will try to share what i believe
fear like so many words was used a bit differently in the past than it is today
i loved my dad but i feared him on a base level, not really even consciously but in the scheme of things ya just knew grown ups had abilities that were mysterious and they could do things you couldnt.
thats all
its just an awareness, a simple respect, an acknowledgement of a power greater than yourself thats all
people feel this way about storms dont they? and many other things.
it means you have humility-thats what a christian means when they seek a god fearing mate that he is humble before god is all

Englishman55: Have seen quite a few profiles recently where the woman is looking for a partner who has.... "A fear of God" or is a "God fearing man"
Whats that all about ?
I thought God said.... "love thy neighbour" and all that, so why should he be feared.
If someone hv the feeling of God fearing, they will know to control their actions to what acceptable limit and then stop, and try to live better for their wife, children, family,... Example: you really love yr parents, brothers, niece & nephew, then u never dare to do bad things harmful to someone's benefit, if u do so then one day you receive back the bad luck, or your family hv to bear this, especially, when yr family hv private business, we become more religious.

Thanks MF...... yes I was being inquisative, because I am not religious and thought there must be more to such a statement than the literal translation.
I think I understand betternow, when it is used, but surely it would be better to just ask for a man/woman that is religious when setting ones criteria.
It does seem a little heavey handed/dominant to use such an expression or are they just ,outhing expressions they have heard so many times before ?
Why not say what is meant then? Why not write "man who respects God" or "God loving man"?
I think fear is always meant to mean fear. It can not be disputed that religions have put the fear of God into their congregation as a means of control.
LOL..well if that is what you want to know...We have to start from the very begining...If you fear God..you probably at least know who He is...not always..But, usually the more you know Him, the more you are humble before Him..cos u are discovering just who He is..

snowbunnie4U: English, Mindful has it right on..Fear means respectful in awe of...not a man who will mock or take for granted who and what God is.
I am respectful of everyones right and ability to have a God, but I do not believe myself in Gods... only of a higher power.... that does not mean I will mock those that do believe.

earleybird66: what or who is "god"
That was not my question..... please re-read my post and stick to the topic...... I have no desire to have this turn into the normal two sided debacle that normally ensues when one mentions God..... mine was a straight forward question requiring straight forward answers....... not deviations ... Thankyou

its just a name EM- and a rose by any other name is still as sweet
its what people say and do with that concept that screw it all up.

Thanks Mindful...it always confuses me when ppl get hung up over the "fear" word..but then i remember when i was young..i think i did too..So, it did graduate to being in awe as I grew older and knew who God really was to me..and to all...Thank you again..U certainly put it out there in a non combative way as well

I did not know women also had that in their profiles. I thought only men did that. I had received several messages from men describing themselves as "God-fearing" so I had in my profile at one time that No God-fearing men because I am not and I am very sceptical of men who are God-fearing. I am like you EM, I don't know what that means.

i would never say i want someone religious because i am not religious.
noooo-hohohoho-ooooooooooo
its about a relationship, not religion
being in a love relationship does not include fear
i loved my dad-but i had a healthy respect for him so to say a god loving person isnt quite all encompassing as the respect/awe aspect isnt touched on- and its an important one
i should say i am reasonably certain that many many christians posting that in their profiles are not meaning it the way i am explaining it tho. i dont think alot of people study words, word history and evolution of it.
