The original poster didn't strike me as being consumed with either anger or hatred, he was simply raising a point about whether the people in Mosney had a right to complain about their situation or not.

Your mind seems to me to be quite narrow,

Why get personal?

Ah sure isnt that the beauty of livin in a democracy?

Left , right , centre....we all have a say...but with respect, sir.

Orla2010: Hmmmmm ..... yes ....... and his post about hoping some of "them" would die on their boat journey home was such a lovely friendly sentiment.

Just looked at his original post again and have to admit that yes he let himself down with his last paragraph, really stupid remark. Up to that I think his point was fair and didn't mention race once. Yes that final paragraph puts a bad spin on the rest of his argument.

woods: It's all too easy to call something prejudice and so just dismiss it out of hand, it's a lot harder to put coherent arguments against it, to point out where you think it's wrong.

Oh dear.

As my Mother says ... what really gets to some Irish people is when they see an immigrant make a success of themselves - especially if they have been sitting on their backside laugh

A Chinese friend of mine is four years into their own business.... they started off cleaning offices here ten years ago. He was an asylum seeker when he came here first. Now he employs seven Irish people and am sure has paid his €19.20 a week back many times over in taxes etc...

Give people a chance and they will flourish. Not all, but some.

???? A few quotes from this thread thus far:

"If i had my way they would be rounded up....

are breeding.....

they should get nothing and told to go home ....especially not let them settle!!!!

they shouildnt feel at home justyet!

Its not a human right to feel safe

You give them an inch and they take a mile

What I cant understand is why we had to let in so many of them, and the cheating fricks in france had some form of an arrangment to only let 100,000 in over a period of so many years...

If they were really persecuted like they claim

When times get tough, society looks for a scape-goat....happens time after time through history.......and it suits the media (silly season) and the goverment (what can I say?) to have us distracted right now....doh

sharina: why ???are they restricted from moving around the local villages/towns???

they must be happy there if they dont want to move???

they have been living in mosney for several years, i imagine they have built up relationships between themselves over this time. part of the reason they would not like to be moved is likely to be that they are being uprooted from these relationships and the safety of the mosney centre. our government put them there, thus ghetto-ising them and left them there when it was convenient to do so.
now, it's no longer convenient - and instead of gradually moving people out in a more humane way, they want to herd them onto buses en masse and put them in various places in dublin. in my humble opinion, these people should never have been left in mosney for so long in the first place. anyone feeling anger towards these people is misplacing the blame for the error.
if the OP really has a strong dislike for what's happening, he should be contacting one of the politicians responsible not blaming the asylum seekers - they do not make the rules.

I think the "it's not a human right to feel safe" quote is the worst - unbelievable. Idi Amin and Franco spring to mind doh

MAny years ago, before so many different nations came here, the government of the day refused to appoint a commisioner...who would have headed up a programme of integration and education.......that delay has cost us dearly..not only in financial terms but in the fostering of ignorance (in the true sense of the word) and fear....

Wouldn't stand over that alright, I was basing my view on his first post, admit I didn't read his subsequent one's. His first post I thought raised some fair points, though not his last paragraph.

Yes, the government's whole immigration policy has been dreadful. The asylum process is far too long and this has a negative impact for both sides. Having people existing in a state of limbo is fruitless. Mosney has become a ghetto and the people there have become institutionalised and isolated. It's the fear of the unknown for many of them now.

I can't imagine what it must feel like to know that you are unwanted by so many people ... people that don't even know you.

sure..the whole setting up of mosney as a "holding unit" is disgraceful....on all points.

But as the old saying goes.....putting others down doesnt make us any higher.....its the language in describing the people caught up in this ,that I object to....

AND its the fear on the other side too!......for many years, most of the population here were irish and irish only.....we werent ready for the cosmopolitan implosion......and our leaders , who knew better, let us down badly.

I would recommend you watch a French film called "Welcome". I saw it in the cinema last year and it haunted me for weeks. It's about the life of a Kurdish asylum seeker in Calais. The story itself is fictional but the acting is amazing and the whole thing is so thought-provoking.
