2 million had left ireland for Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

An estimated total of 36,278,332 Americans — over 12% of the total population and 20% of the white population - reported Irish ancestry in 2008. do you want them all back here so?

Orla2010: How do you know they are ungrateful? Have you spoken to any?

Imagine that you had to flee Ireland because of persecution and genocide and you ended up in another country ... alone, unable to speak the language and severely traumatised .... only for people in that country to be hostile to you and begrudge you food and shelter and the paltry sum of €19.10 per week.

There but for the grace of God go all of us

BentLid: Just looking at the news and see all this commotion going on in mosney with asylum seekers refusing to be moved on to new homes,
In my opinion these people do not have the right to have a choice if they stay or go, think about it they are seeking asylum here and won`t cooperate with the authorities so they should be shipped off back to whatever country they came from, we don`t need this hassle, they have been put up there for years, given money ever week, Fed every day for NOTHING and this is the thanks they give our country....
If i had my way they would be rounded up and put into a giant rowing boat and make them row back to their own country and out of our way, this rowing would probably kill most of them seeing as they havent worked in years

doh I imagine there are many people with your attitude working in the dept. of Justice and the government, thats why these people are held up in a camp for many years unable(not allowed) to work or integrate into the community sigh

If you put the blame where it truly lies with the government, they might b forced to act and allow these people to get on with their lives

I just am grateful that you, Sir, were not employed in some Immigration Department during the exodus of millions of Irish to the US and other countries, when they fled starvation at home.

With an attitude like yours, its amazing that millions more didnt get "shipped back" to face death.thumbs down roll eyes

sharmini: what its really about is attitudes..generalisations... lack of information.. fear....its one thing to say hey, were broke and cant afford to keep mosney (what a hell hole) as it is. Its quite another to address the people living there in terms that would not befit an animal. Every human being could be afforded basic respect....it costs nothing.....on the other hand, lack of respect for our fellow human beings costs more than any of us really want to afford...

I totally agree.

Bigotry, in all its variants, is an ugly disease.
There are some people that would treat an animal better than another human being. But, really, I do feel sorry for these people ... to be consumed with anger or hatred is horrible, and I would hate to have a mind so narrow and blinkered.

Prejudice :
a baseless and usually negative attitude toward members of a group. Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotyped beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against members of the group.

The original poster didn't strike me as being consumed with either anger or hatred, he was simply raising a point about whether the people in Mosney had a right to complain about their situation or not.

Your mind seems to me to be quite narrow, you object when someone disagrees with the Left-Liberal consensus.

Hmmmmm ..... yes ....... and his post about hoping some of "them" would die on their boat journey home was such a lovely friendly sentiment.

Orla2010: Not at all.

It makes no difference to me what people think. I am just glad that I don't think the same way a lot of the posters do. I am eternally grateful to my parents that they raised me as prejudice free as I think anyone can be - all humans have prejudices but some let theirs fester into a disease.I have travelled all over the world and I always think that we all have more similarities than differences. I have travelled in Iran as a single woman on my own and never felt in any danger ... although if you were to believe the stereotypes I should have stoned to death or forced into a burkha and married to a few different men!

It is very easy to generalise but a lot more difficult to discover the truth.

Each to their own, but I am glad my "own" is what it is

It's all too easy to call something prejudice and so just dismiss it out of hand, it's a lot harder to put coherent arguments against it, to point out where you think it's wrong.
