Conrad73: after taking a Swipe!

Refute my Statement, about the Energy-Content,instead of talking about Neanderthals!

I did not even comment on your "Energy-Content" numbers. I trust that they are correct.

If I take a swipe, you will not need to wonder if it was so.

Can we not simply respectfully discuss?confused

Sustainable human civilization, for eons, not decades.

Who's for discussing possible tweaks to the current operation techniques of our global village?

It might be able to "fly" indefinitely, but takeoff and landing and carrying any sort of load would make greatly tax its capacities.

This was really cool and it's proof that if you make something large enough and light enough and can get it to go slow enough, solar energy can make it move.

It has an enormous 208 foot wingspan (over 60 meters), has a takeoff weight of only 4400 pounds, (around 2000 kilos), and can fly at the eye popping speed of 22 MPH (around 30 kmh).

It's proof that if you have enough engineering resources available, it is possible to engineer something so small and light and slow moving and impractical that even solar energy can power it. Proof that solar energy is the power of the future? Not-so-much. Carrying one person who has to go on a diet and empty out all the change in his pocket before climbing into the cockpit is a bit of a fly in the ointment.

It was a bit like trying to prove that you can power a lightbulb with nothing but gerbils on treadmill wheels. It's kinda cool that it is technically possible even if it's practically useless.

Thanks for your input and for bumping the thread.

Your analogy--for me--is like saying that Lindburg would have done his flight over the Atlantic much better with a 747.

Sure, the early solar or peddle-powered aircraft are inefficient, so was every other prototype ever developed. So?

In my opinion, the sooner that humankind gets to work on designing and developing cleaner modes of (fill in), the sooner we will have practical methods to sustain humankind into the long-term future.

AmoroArboles: For those who say, "It can't be done!" Open your minds to the possibilities, please!

PAYERNE, Switzerland – An experimental solar-powered plane completed its first 24-hour test flight successfully Thursday, proving that the aircraft can collect enough energy from the sun during the day to stay aloft all night.

The test brings the Swiss-led project one step closer to its goal of circling the globe using only energy from the sun.

Pilot Andre Borschberg eased the Solar Impulse out of the clear blue morning sky onto the runway at Payerne airfield about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of the Swiss capital Bern at exactly 9 a.m. (0700 GMT; 3 a.m. EDT)

The team says it has now demonstrated that the single-seat plane can theoretically stay in the air indefinitely, recharging its depleted batteries using 12,000 solar cells and nothing but the rays of the sun during the day. {By Eliane Engeler, AP}
Here's to humankind's inventive abilities, and to my complete faith in US to use them to help us ALL!

I thought you said it was a Swiss-led project.confused

...What a fantastic achievement, whichever country is responsible. Imagine a jet liner being able to do the same one day.applause peace

Yes! Thank you.

Eliane Engeler, wrote the story I pasted; whether Swiss or Ugandan, who cares which human gets credit for inventing planet-sustaining technologies?

My hope is that these "new" methods are put to use before our species has polluted our only planet beyond its ability to sustain us-(and future generations).

<<this is only in it's development, and as with many other inventions, the prototype appears a bit useless but it will be interesting to follow the development of this form of power supply.

Also the spin off from these developments usually justifies the cost.
