It was much more recent than that actually, people in Spain were still being burned at the stake during the years of the French Revolution in the 1790's.
Artist Francisco Goya's famous sketches illustrate his eye witness accounts vividly. Goya had painted caricatures that were deemed disrespectful to religion, so the inquisitor of Madrid 'kindly' invited Goya to attend some poor sod's burning as a 'friendly' warning of what would happen to him unless his art became more diplomatic.
Here in Malta we still had an inquisitor as well till Napoleon arrived in 1798. Spain and Malta were the last 2 countries to remove the inquisition in fact.
