mcattack: What we could do is have every cars speed restricted to the maximum speed limit, that way there will be no speeding on Moterways!! Then i would have everyone that has a provisional licence or under the age of 23 have their cars speed restricted to 80kmph.
Nobody thinks thats a good idea??? Maybe because we all speed and would for that to happen??

I think its a good idea or at least have some way of being able to put a lock on it so that it wouldnt be able to do speeds above a certain speed. Also once people pass their full test they should have to have other plates to show that they have passd their test but are restricted in certain ways. I think they have or had them in the UK - R plates. Have them for 2 years and if they have no points or incidents then give them their full licence. If they get any points or violations they have to resit the test and start the 2 years over again.

HI
If the government was serious about road deaths they can easily introduce governers on all cars. The governer should be compulsory for all drivers under 25 with say 100kph top speed. I agreed totally with the R plate system and there's a minimal cost to it.
If all cars entering the country have governers, then repeated offenders with full licences could have the device activated to enforce the speed limits, with a mandidory 2 year ban for meddling with the device.
Whatever else, serious action needs to be taken to stop this carnage. The dead are dead, but the families, friends and communities left behind are being ripped apart by these constant tragedies.

I wonder have the RSA or the relevant bodies actually sat down with a group of males / females aged 17/25 and actually asked them what would get home to them to stop them taking the risks and speeding??? What would shock them into realising that they are only human and it can happen to them ??????????

I know from my point of view, that at 18/21 i wanted no-one telling me what to do, as i knew it all and was immortal. It's the nature of youth. It wasn't until 24/25 that i realised just how little i knew about the world... really. Now I was driving since i was 13, around local fields where we learnt to handle a car. The only thing that may shock them into listening is a trip to the A&E to see the results of a bad crash, the carnage, death and suffering. This may seem extreme, but extreme mearuses are whats needed

Well thats what Im trying to get at. At that age you do think that it will never happen to you and yes that you do know everything. Would a trip to A&E or a rehab clinic be enough to drum it home to them. Or would it take listening to mothers, fathers, brothers, sister or friends talking about how it has impacted on their lives to get it home???????? Only the kids will be able to say this is what would make me sit up and listen. I'm all for shock tactics with kids if it keeps them around to grow up into adults. And although Im not a parent Im sure any parent would be the same.

I agree with you. I have two young sons 5 & 3. I want them to be around to grow up into adulthood. May be a group of 25/28 year olds, who have hopefully past the, "you'll not tell me what to do stage" could offer an insight into possible actions required. When i was given the right to drive on the roads at 17, in grew up in delagny in wicklow, I was checked for drink every now and again when i arrived home, and the rules were simple if you get caught speeding... no driving for a month. Parents need to parent too, and remove privilages from kids who break the rules. So many parents want to be their kids friends, where kids need parents who set and impose the rules... Until they show that they are responsible and can be trusted. IMHO

I totally agree with yourself and Ladylumps and this is the kind of discussion I was wanting to see on here and had we had competent politicians, it's the kind if discussion we should be seeing in the Dail.....but of course while the country's in turmoil they've extended their holidays! Stop them doind any more damage I suppose!

Good post mate. From experience parents are the main problem, or their lack of parenting skills.
what i do think is hilarous(this shows hoe backwards we are) a learner is technically not permitted to drive on a motorway but as soon as they pass their test they are free to drive on a road that they have no experiece on,, now that is pure kerryman style!

Yes good point misses and even if you fail your test you can still walk out of the test centre get into your car and drive off ?????????????????????????? WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well i've said it for years, " You need a licience to have a dog, car, tv or a gun, and yet any idiot can have a child". May be when they start driver ed. in the schools they will run a parenting class alongside it

I lived ion London for 4 years, and not one of my mates there could believe that we could drive in a learner permit.. now i know they have changed that rule but you still see L plated drivers on their own ON MOTORWAYS
