Batty000: ok lol!!!! well i know wht way people pass the blame etc but at the end of the day its the person who is behind the wheel that is responsible!
if they decide to break the limit its there decision and the sad thing is they dont think about the consequences!
Yes but these "black spots"... If the government wanted to they could easilt turn a nad bend into a nice little junction or straighten it out! One black spot in Mayo i read before had over 70 crashes in 1 year, it plainly ridiculous.

Well, oddly enough there was a programme on TV3 last night about the money wasted by the government during the celtic tiger. Part of this was millions wasted on motorways that are un-needed.I believe for example County Louth has 4 motorways and a government minister! (Could be Meath!) This was against proffesional advice which they had also paid millions for which recommended less motorways and an upgrade of all the national roads. It seemes that the politicians loved the photo opertunities of opening motorways as it made it look like the country and the ecconomy was soaring ahead. (Smoke and mirrors apparently!)
Anyhoos, the conclusion they made was a 3rd world national road network, underused and overpriced motorways and billions of Euros up in smoke.

Louth only has one Motorway; it's the M 1 from Dublin to Belfast. It also forms part of the Euro Route EU 01 from Larne to Rosslare Harbour.
eh hang on sometimes its not just the provisional drivers who casue the accidents! you see elderly people killed over in the west driving on their own etc who have been driving for years

I never said its just provisional drivers but this is the biggest problem that has to be addressed!!!
Godsgift: Like I said Losty, I'm just going by the prog and it could be Meath but there is a county with 4 motorways. I have it on tape.
The only other county it could be (Apart from Dublin) would be Meath but it's splitting hairs to say it has four motorways, or in it's case maybe 5. The M1 passes through it for a few KM en route to Belfast while the M4/M6 cross the county borders at Kinnegad and Enfield briefly but they are en route to the West of Ireland. Only the M 2 (Ashbourne) and M 3 (Navan and Kells) actually serve Meath as a county.
Regardless, it has precious little to do with the lack of driving skills and consideration shown by the many young males killed on our road
What we could do is have every cars speed restricted to the maximum speed limit, that way there will be no speeding on Moterways!! Then i would have everyone that has a provisional licence or under the age of 23 have their cars speed restricted to 80kmph.

Kinnegad is Westmeath no?? Not being smart, just wondering....

There are actually very few accidents on motorways. I doubt the lads that died yesterday were anywhere near motorway speed but were doing excessive speed for the road conditions.
Perhaps along with the theory test, we should be shown mangled bodies being removed from vehicles.
ITV are actually doing a good Police Camera Action series just now where they introduce people who openly admit to reading, speeding, texting, drinking, applying make up,having dogs on their laps, etc to victims. I actually cried at one program where a child was shown 3 years on with brain damage and needed 24 hour care.
They also got these drivers onto a police test circuit to show them how easily accidents could happen.

It is... Just! The Motorway crosses the Meath/Kildare/Westmeath county line several times which is my point; the Motorway isn't there to serve Meath as such so it's somewhat misleading to say that it is as well served as it is.

I agree but many of our rural and national roads have never been upgraded since they were built for cars which did no more than 40 mph. You can do 100 mph nowadays in a 1.0 litre engine.
The flood and frost damge from last winter has not been repaired around here. The Gardai need to keep up the pressure, not just 2 week initiatives. The RSA need to start puting infomertials on tv showing people the risks on a regular basis.
And parents need to realise that their 17 year olds are not yet fully cooked and need to be protected from themselves. Giving inexperienced drivers fast cars is not perhaps the brightest idea.
And just to discredit us both as being total hypocrites....what speed did we both do on the way to Belturbert?

Good post. In the long and short, motorists have to take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel and while the State has a duty to ensure roads are safe to use it can't be held responsible if people don't drive safely, be it a motorway or a back road.
There is a certain amount of common sense people need to use when driving and if it means taking a corner at 20KMH, pulling over to attend to something than my distract you or even not driving at all at certain times if you are unfit or barred to do then that is always the responsibility of the motorist
