Its all well and good blaming the Guardai but they cant be waitng behind every wall and tree waiting for someone to come along. And raising the age limit wont make a difference either. The simple fact is if someone is gonna speed and drive dangerously he is just as lightly to do it at 21 as 17. Even more so i think. And of course speed is a factor. Its just that these young guys think they are invincible and that it will never happen to them.

Godsgift: Four more kids are dead on our roads in the last 12 hours! What can we do to stop it?

How about we set up a driver ed. program in schools, like in the scandanavian countries and the states. Kids start learning at thirteen the rules of the road and basic driving skills.

Unfortunately there's no legislation for stupidity. Full licence or no full licence - same thing could/will happen regardless.

I wasn't blaming the Gardaí at all... Just suggesting that there are duties us "mere mortals" can take off their hands... And, those of us unemployed at the moment (there are a LOT of us!) could help out...

They can still hit 80+ mph in a 1 ltr......But maybe restrict the cars top speed.... Random stops to ensure it is restricted..... Something needs to be done though

Ten years ago it was exceptable to drive after having a few pints, public perception has changed, and rightly so,i think the lack of the celtic tiger will slow the amount of young drivers on the road, due to pure economics, slowly the general attitudes to speeding will develope in the younger generation, instead of hitting them with high premuims from the begining, offer them insurance at a exceptable level, and then increase there policies dramaticly if they are caught breaking the law, maybe this would offer some insentive, although it is hard to put a mature head on young shoulders

I think these steps are required...

1. 18 to be minimum age before being allowed behind the wheel.
2. Nobody under the age of 21 allowed a drivers licence or be allowed drive without a qualified driver who has a minimum of 5 years driving experience.
3. Between the ages of 18 and 21, the learner must undertake one 1hr driving lesson a week minimum, this rising to one 2hr lesson in year two or two 1 hr tests per week.
4. In year 3 at the age of 21, the learner must undertake a series of monthly driving tests, ten in total for the final year learning.

They must pass all ten test to qualify as a driver.
They must over the three year period of learning attain 250hrs. minimun driving hours with a qualified instructor.

After which they will face continuous assessment twice yearly until the age of 25.

Failure of any aspect mentioned should result in the Failure Driver being banned from attempting to drive a car for life.

Screech: Dont be silly!!
Just because some 17 year old raging with testosterone kills himself and a few others doesnt mean we need to raise the driving age, a few young people spoil it for the rest of them, what about all the other 17 year olds who drive responsibly and carefully?
should we deny them the right to drive just because a few idiots cant handle their own hormones?
this will happen again and again, people will never learn to slow down

I agree 100 percent...raising the legal driving age isnt going to stop the dumb ones from getting behind the wheel unfortunately. I dont think this is a problem that can be solved short of getting rid of cars all together which obviously isnt practical.

JMO!!personally after reading this thread i had this argument with a instructor only last week and spoke about age limit and speed in cars!
as he said all 1ltr and 1.2ltrs car should be done away with their only made of thin crash in them and they bend in 2!!
he said they should be driving stronger cars at least it may protect their safety but also stated as long as they dont over do the speed limit and have safety belts on!

Young lads dont want to drive a 1ltr car anyway. The guy next door to me drives a TDI Golf same as me but he doesnt care that its costing him a fortune he just wants the powerful car.
