Four more kids are dead on our roads in the last 12 hours! What can we do to stop it?

How about people pass their driving test before they are allowed behind the wheel, that would be the easiest solution.

I think there's a chicken and egg problem there. How do they pass their test without getting behind the wheel to learn?confused

Without making any assumptions here but it's going to be quite likely that the driver in today's tragic accident was either driving without a full licence or worse yet no learners permit or training. So long as people continue to do this in Ireland, young people will continue to die in crashes like this or that in Donegal a month ago.

By applying for the driving test first, then once they pass they get their license plain and simple, black and white.

How about if you are 17-21 years old you can drive only if accompanied by someone over 21. This would eliminate the car full of young lads 'egging on' the young lad doing the driving. This would target the type of accident in Kerry today and Donegal recently.

Perhaps the Gardai need to act more diligently. We'll have a couple of weeks of checkpoints and then it will go back to normal. It was the same with random breath testing. There should be no need for Operation ********! These operations should be standard Garda practice!conversing

How about banning people from even driving until they have passed their driving test? Even in Ireland surely that would be the most logical solution.

same as the north they are not allowed to drive without a qualified driver beside them until they pass. Also test has got more difficult now to pass up here, which is great, i agree with raising the age, if it saves one life it is worth it.professor

OK...baby steps!

To get a licence you say they have to pass a test.

But to pass a test they have to get behind the wheel to practise and to sit the test.

But you say they can't do this without a licence? Nobody could learn to drive!

Oh that's the law in the south too now but a lot of them just took the L plates down and never bothered to sit a test. I'm amazed their insurance even pays out.

As is said already comes in baby steps, teaching the rudimentary skills of driving first, theory test then the actual test. Then the individual gets the license.

Thats not a bad idea. I'd also introduce it into the curriculum in schools like in America. They learn the theory and only then can they get into a car with an instructor. Maybe they could also have to put in so many hours in a car/lessons before they can apply for a licence.

The problem is not all young people though. I have seen some older drivers momentarily "forget" the rules of the road even if they have been driving for years.

True, but they tend to forget in a way that doesn't put their lives and other lives at risk, the young driver makes the tragic mistake of speed, which is the mistake that kills.

You're not getting it. How can they sit the practical test and learn rudimentary skills if you won't let them behind the wheel without a licence?

I'm amazed you can't see the problem with your idea that the only people who can drive are the ones who have already passed their test!

The Law here specifies that learner drivers must have taken at least 10 lessons from professionally registered Driving Instructors before they are allowed to sit a driving test and that they need to hold a Learners Permit for 6 months before they apply for their test. You also have to pass the Driver Theory Test before you can apply for your Learners Permit and you must not drive unless you are accompanied by a holder of a Full Driving Licence. The test in the State is a lot easier than that in Europe so it may not be as easy to have it taught in schools; in any case some school kids here would not be old enough to legally hold a Permit (17) so what we do with them needs to be addressed.

Very true though it's still younger drivers who cause the most carnage in the main.handshake

I disagree. If someone cuts across you and you end up hitting another car or a wall, speed doesn't necessarily have to be a factor.

As for the learning to drive without actually driving, maybe they could play a driving simulation game or something to start off with although sooner or later, someone is going to need experience behind the wheel.

Maybe it could be done as part of the leaving cert or something then. I'd imagine very few leaving cert students would be under 17.

I think the problem is attitude more than anything else. And it's lack of proper punishments for bad road behaviour. Lack of manpower in the Gardaí to police this. I'm unemployed at the moment and if I was asked to train to use a speed detector I wouldn't hesitate. Why is this job left to the Gardaí? Isn't it a relatively simple recording device? I get "dole" so they wouldn't even have to pay me - it'd give me something to do and help stop this.

Dont be silly!!
Just because some 17 year old raging with testosterone kills himself and a few others doesnt mean we need to raise the driving age, a few young people spoil it for the rest of them, what about all the other 17 year olds who drive responsibly and carefully?
should we deny them the right to drive just because a few idiots cant handle their own hormones?
this will happen again and again, people will never learn to slow down
