I guess you can say NZ is lucky in a very unlucky circumstance- earthquakes with such high magnetite have killed thousand elsewhere in the world. Still the damage has been done and lives disrupted.

I think there are around 4000 earthquakes reported everyday around the world.
And now we have a plane crash with 9 confirmed dead in the south island too.

I will assume AJ and HY are all good and safe as they are on the north island. You never though, they could have taken off on a romantic weekend to Christchurch

Napier was flattened in the 1931 earthquake, Wellingtons only exit out is on a fault line
