If one shops a place like Wal Mart.....the major money goes out of town for good! But if that same money was paid to a local store.....that store owner would have his roof fixed, the roofer would by tires from the local tire guy, he pays his worker, the worker pays for his furniture with the local furniture guy, he then would buy groceries at the store down the street who would have his signs repainted by the local sign painter, he would buy his wife a new ring at the local jewelry store, they would pay to have thier windows washed, who would buy something from the store owner who started the cycle. But but Wal-mart and it goes to the stock holder who piles it in the bank or spends it outside of the town the money came from.......millions each year...paying a few worker.....a drop in the bucket compared to what leaves a town.
I agree in principle, Rilly, but I must ask why all your hypothetical business owners and workers are male? Can't the local sign painter buy her husband a ring? Might not the store owner have her roof fixed?

Something else to think about!
I would like to know why the woman buying the ring can not be buying it for her girl friend partner in life? Why is the woman not having her female lover's roof fixed? Is you a bigot or sumptin?

I think most people know this but the draw of the dollar tree and walmart's constant price rollbacks are just too much to withstand... Especially for people living on crap incomes supporting a bunch of kids on their own. In our gotta have everything right now for a dollar society it's almost impossible to avoid the big conglamorates. I personally detest walmart and rarely ever spend a dime in there.
There are NO local stores for me to shop at. If there were LOCAL stores for me to shop at, I probably couldn't afford to shop at them.
I didn't make the rules! I didn't send the good jobs overseas to cheap foreign labor, CEOs and VPs, etc., of top firms did. The only thing that I can do is buy what I can afford and if all I can afford is what is sold at discount stores like Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, etc., then those are the stores I will be shopping at. It's about survival.
I pay plenty of taxes on my purchases that go into local, state and federal coffers, not to mention when I pay mortgage/rent, utilities, etc.

People are now/cheapest buyers. But such places have the cheapest stuff for a reason and its not value but cheap sold cheap. If you buy a chiar thats broken, you don't save 50%.....you are buying a broken chair. If people would stay away from such places, their money would be shorter for a small time , but in the long run....things would give longer service and they would make more money because money would flow local. its the old gas tank thing.....drive on empty or drive with a full tank......but a full tank never stops you on a road at night. People need to learn to spend wise....not cheap.
They spend a price and buy a bike thats last the summer....but if a bit more was spent....it would last a few years.....and when sold......it could be sold, instead of sold for scrap.
The money they save they piss it off on junk most of the time.

Jobs sent overseas was to be able to have lower prices for you. but if you have no job....low prices don't help a whole bunch.
I can buy tuna at the dollar store and mash out the water....I am left with about 1/4 can of mush....not chunks of tuna. If a grocery store is selling the higher tuna....remove the water and I will have 3/4 a can of tuna. Where is the low price. try it some time. Lower prices means more fillers and more water, in a lot of cases.....check it out. I am short of cash like all others.....but I come out better not buying too cheap.
But my point is that if those places were not sending money out of local there would be more money for all if it was spent with local people.

I live in a small town so when wally world came here yes some store's did close local's that had been here for years it's sad to see these people lose some got out and closed down befor they lost.Still I shop local as much as I can the local shops do sell better quality products and I would rather shop smart then buy just because it was cheap at least I will have it for a while. We have lots of farmers markets as well but mostly for produce. But even if you are buying local does this really mean that your money that you have spent for there profit stays where you are?

I understand that, however, people with no job usually qualify for unemployment and if not, then some type of state assistance. Where do you think they will shop if they are receiving unemployment benefits or some other state assistance benefits? I'll tell ya...it won't be at the "made in America" with a cost of three or four times what it would cost them at Walmart. I'm not advocating for Walmart. The problem is what makes sense when you have just a little to make do with, whether you are employed or not.
Many years ago, you could find a great many things "made in America," now it's next to impossible. Look around your home, the computer you are logged onto right now was more than likely not made in America, your lamps, alarm clock, toaster, toaster oven, fan, air conditioner, clothing.
I've looked around my home and everything and I mean everything besides me was made somewhere other than America and not by choice, by necessity.
During winter I refuse to have to find parking blocks away from the stores. Which leaves one walking blocks and blocks with a biting cold wind in your face. (I personally am not able to do this). The downtown stores either sell products too expensive or cheap crap. It is not one-stop stopping. It is a hunt for what you want. And if you don't have a car, imagine the hassle it is with children. It just isn't conducive to pleasurable shopping. My town has 3 malls....2 of them are struggling and the 3rd just expanded. And Wal-*art is doing gang busters.
