Is there a more horrific and terrifying thought than the idea that we could experience a cataclysmic event that would destroy all human life on this planet? Or all life of any sort? Or the planet, itself?

It's great stuff for Hollywood movie plots because it strikes at a very primal fear.

So the philosophical question is this: What difference does it really make to you whether you die in a car accident, from a heart attack or from the impact of a super-meteorite that destroys the world and kills everything else, too? When you die, what does it matter whether you die alone or the whole world dies with you? We're all going to die. And most feel that when we do that's it, end of story, there's no more and so it really wouldn't matter. And if you believe in life after death, then also, why would it matter?

I believe there is some sort of life after death as I have had a very real experience several times of someone very close to me after she passed away. I suppose the main thing is people who we leave behind and how will they cope and our hope they will be happy with their lives. Also the method of death - preferably quick with no suffering. Oh this is morbid!

Not the point. The question is "Why is it more terrifying or horrific to imagine dying in a worldwide apocalypse than dying by any other more mundane and, probably painful, means?".

My opinion on this is that it would be a terrible shame - to put it mildly - if we had come as far as we have (and yes I know some haven't come far at all) and the 'world would end.' What a waste. However there is a likelihood that either meteors or solar flares are likely to affect planet earth. So if the madmen with their fingers on the button don't start WW3, it is possible a deadly catastrophe will affect us.

According to science, the end of the world is as inevitable and the only question is "when". Humans will probably be just a footnote in the world's fossil record when it happens, but if we believe what science tells us about the nature of the universe, the demise of the world is a foregone conclusion.

I'd prefer to have a long life and think that my children and their children would too... So I guess that's why it's better to die yourself than everyone you love going with you. Many many people die to save another.

Since all things in the universe must die it is not how you die that defines your life. But how you live with in the time given to you.. the budda

That would be the time to stock up the 4WD with food, supplies, and ammo and head for the remotest area you can find that has game and fresh water available. Oh yeah, and take a hunting bow along too and save the ammo for when you may really need it.

That does it. Time to start building a bunker out of beer kegs.
