Is it any wonder that Ireland is sometimes seen as a nation of drunks? Why not a Powers, Bushmils or Cork Dry Gin day too?

Im heading off to London the next day for a wedding so I wont be partaking this year unfortunately.

Although with all the bad reports from last year i.e people having tickets for venues but not being able to get in, its probably a good thing that I will be staying home!
dunno

I really don't understand this phenomenon in the least - anyone care to try and explain it?? Arthur's day just came out of nowhere for no reason it seems - and it also appears that it's now trying to compete with christmas?!? Everyone is buzzing around working out plans for this new imaginary, alcohol fueled day?! Isnt that every day in this country - why does a new day need to specifically be invented?? Does it strike anyone else odd that its only cropped up recently, about the time when the recession hit in and mid-week drinking was probably hitting an all time low?? That Diago and friends sat around going, hmmm this isn't good, this isn't good at all - we have a slump between major drinking days so quick lets invent a new one and lets make it mid-week as thats when sales are really low...?? Anyone ever think about these things or do we all just run with marketing and peer pressure?? Oh god no! no! no! I can't be all alone on ARTHURS DAY?!?! Do the samaritans get many calls that day from those who cannot make Arthurs day plans in time and are all alone at home?? I cannot make heads or tails of this new pointless phenomenon that is ravaging the city. So can anyone shed a light on it BEYOND just stating

BUT ITS ARTHURS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. I know. That's what I stated several times in my post. I was just more wondering why no one else can see that and realize it - or if they do see and realize this fact - why they so mindlessly just go along with it? - That answer isn't much better than
BECAUSE ITS ARTHURS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is of course marketing but it would be wrong to connect it to a randomly chosen date or the recession. It was to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Guinness and was years in the planning. Now that they see it offers further commercial potential they will attempt to continue it.

Non-drinker here aswell - it just seems beyond rediculous how much people are getting worked up into a hype over this pointless day. Pubs are free and empty these days - so why is everyone getting so hot and bothered over trying to fight their way into them, buying tickets and getting upset if they can't - just because its a made up day that marketers decided to have to boost sales? I mean if it were really advertised as it was instead of thinly veiled as a 'anniversary celebration' would anyone bother or would they be sick to their knickers/boxers of it already like any sane person is??

All hail, next year, Sept 23 is no longer Arthurs Day - its then officially

DRINK ALOT TODAY BECAUSE SALES ARE WAAAAAAAAAY DOWN DAY. DIAGO NEEDS YOUR MONEY MORE THAN YOU DO! COME ONE COME ALL!

I dont agree with it at all.

Marketing of alcohol should be banned. Except internally in pubs.

All sports sponsorship by drinks companies should also be terminated. oh and if they need the money they can go and get it elsewhere.

It's marketing, with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Arthur Guinness Fund to support local entrepreneurs.

As it's a school night I'll be out on Friday for

when all tourist attractions in Dublin will have free admission and Dublin Bus will have some free buses around the city.
