Losty: Unless you are definitely going to keep up at least 3 hours gym work a week they are an expensive way to keep fit. If it's just the walking machine your after, save the money for Xmas!!!

First, you need a base level of aerobic fitness to be able to do much on any machine so don't feel put out if you are blown out on any of the machines; start easy and short and work your way up gradually to more intense exercises. Don't eat for a good 4 hours before you work out as it will hurt you inside; a decent instructor will be able to give you diet sheets and a work out that will suit what you want to do and achieve and have lots of waters handy to avoid dehydration; you'd get through a litre during and just a work out in no time!!! Warming up and down is a vital part of your work as it helps to lessen injury and stiffness over time so find yourself some good stretches and that. Even small trips like walking to and from the shop for short distances adds to your exercise regime and helps keep your body supple and loose.

Lastly, don't give up easy and be prepared to work at it for a good 10 weeks before you really notice lasting effects (I know you won' give upt!!!). Don't even look at a scales or tape measure for a good month as working out to lose either a dress size or weight will take a while and are a long term goal Don't worry about hunger pangs either as your body's metabolism is changing and the increased activity will make it burn off foods quicker; plenty of fruit and veg and wholemeal starches will help curb these

Hi,sorry but have to add something to this.Or ask something. What do you mean don't eat 4 hours before you work out? This is the most hideous thing I've ever heard...Body needs energy, fuel to work ... walk in any gym and they will tell you different things but none of them will tell you don't eat 4 ! hours before you work out...They don't want to call ambulance if you collapse because your blood sugar level dropped in a second while you are working out...

I have heard that you will burn fat more quickly on an empty tummy as it's the only place for the muscles to get the energy. But it was also stressed that if you are diabetic, which I am, NEVER to exercise on an empty stomach!laugh

well done FR- the gym can be daunting, but i go when i want, get out in the refresh air when it's sunny ( I'm no martyr!laugh )but feel i WANT to go again, because I see the results.
I love my food- but I want to be healthy/fit/slim, and i find that by doing some exercise, i can enjoy the food that I love, without guilt ( and we all know about that!!roll eyes )not saying that I AM healthy/fit/slim but i do try!!!
So my advice to you is,.. don't feel you have to go 7 days a week- you'll get bored and lose your motivation- go as often as you actually enjoy it, in time that will become more often , as a workout becomes less 'torture'! and more 'something you do because you like the results'.
# Can i suggest classes? my experience is that they are hard, but that is because they make you work harder than you would make yourself do, .sounds bad, but they are short and once they are over, you feel brilliant! and then you can enjoy-->cheers LOL

Enjoy the gym... also I find going out at lunch time doing a really fast jogging walk type of thing is great for making you feel better and if you combine that with the gym work - you will see results + we get to see loads of fit guys out at lunch time... wow

Hideous? Bit harsh of a word to use considering that you have not offered any advice yourself

Any halfway intensive exercise on a full stomach is bad news. There isn't a problem with having a banana or a small bit of pasta or a slice of wholemeal bread to break hunger maybe 90 minutes before but certainly no heavy meals It exposes you to cramps in your torso area, it makes you liable to get dozy and limits it's flexibility big time so you either end up either not enjoying the work out, feeling or even getting sick, unable to push yourself as much as you can or a combination of all three. The body does prefer small meals eaten often as it's easier to deal with but still nothing heavy pre workout.

Also, there is are nutritional reason to take into consideration. The fuel the body takes in through complex carbohydrates take hours to break down into sugars and are ample fuel for the body while exercising; they are also a regulated supply that the gut likes to deal with. If you start a work out and the body needs an immediate kick and the quick carb supply isn't there, it will burn anything it has handy; this usually ends up as fats and protein which are needed for different reason in the body that will need to be replaced (More eating, in other words), they are harsher for the gut to digest and they are no better for fueling your work out than carbs in the end. In short, your tummy won't like you that much and your metabolism will go ape in time.

Lastly, there isn't that much risk of your blood sugars dropping to dangerous levels unless you either have starved yourself silly that day or are diabetic. Diabetics know better than most people how to look after their eating patterns and are wise to things like that.
